The Fall of Constantinople: The Day the Medieval World Ended — Fexingo History
After Constantinople fell on May 29, 1453, Sultan Mehmed II ordered a search for the body of the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos. This episode follows the grim work of the Ottoman executioner and his team as they identified the emperor's corpse among thousands of dead. We examine the practical challenges of battlefield clearance in a pre-modern army, the Islamic legal principles governing treatment of the dead, and the political necessity of confirming Constantine's death. Drawing on accounts from the Ottoman chronicler Tursun Beg, the Greek historian Doukas, and the Venetian surgeon Nicolò Barbaro, we reconstruct the executioner's methods: how he distinguished imperial armour, the condition of the body when found, and the forensic clues that confirmed identity — including the purple boots that marked a Byzantine emperor. We also explore why Mehmed ordered a public burial with honours, and how the executioner's own story was later mythologised. The episode ends with the quiet aftermath: the clearing of the Great Church of Hagia Sophia and the transformation of a corpse into a legend. #Constantinople1453 #MehmedII #ConstantineXI #OttomanExecutioner #HagiaSophia #TursunBeg #Doukas #NicolòBarbaro #ByzantineEmpire #OttomanEmpire #MedievalWarfare #ForensicHistory #PurpleBoots #May291453 #FexingoHistory #History #Podcast #MiddleEastHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo [https://buymeacoffee.com/fexingo]
