In which he subsequently makes the acquaintance of the genteelly reckless Harry Bolton, a prodigal youth of noble bearing and uncertain intentions, whose company introduces the Yankee to the bustling life and stratagems of Liverpool’s docks, culminating in a sudden and secretive journey to the grandeur of London’s West End.

In which the docks and alleys of Liverpool unfold as a grim tapestry of poverty, cunning beggars, and shadowy dealings that haunt the daily passage of sailors and labourers alike.
