episode 1985 - A Year in Movies cover

Beskrivelse

This week on the podcast we "gotta get back in time" - and if you just sang those 5 words to the same tune as Huey Lewis and the News, then you are in the right place? For this episode, our four mulls are heading back to 1985, the year that  - cinematically - saw the arrival on our screens of The Goonies, Axel Foley, Freddy Krueger... and, of course, Doc and Marty in Back to the Future.  Beyond the world of the movies, 1985 also saw the arrival of our youngest 'mull'!  We reflect on our favourite movies, the ones that we've rewatched the most, the ones we missed and, briefly, the worst... before attempting to determine what might be 'objectively' the greatest movie of the year.  Listen in and let us know all the movies that you remember from 1985!   PS Apologies for the confusion about the release date of one of our favourite comedies from the year - CLUE! - which was indeed released in 1985.  The error in research was all mine (says Darren!).

episode What We've Been Watching - Deep Rising, The Bride!, Obsession, Is This Thing On? cover

What We've Been Watching - Deep Rising, The Bride!, Obsession, Is This Thing On?

Our four mulls have gathered together again this week to share with you four more reviews - helping you decide what to watch, at home or at the movies, this week. First up, Justin tells us all about the 1998 action horror film, Deep Rising, a bit of a  creature feature from 'The Mummy' director Stephen Sommers which includes a luxury liner, a band of jewel heists and a large monster!  Then, Neil shares his thoughts about the latest film to venture into the world of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein... The Bride!, from director Maggie Gyllenhaal and starring Oscar-winners Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, takes us to 1930's America, gangsters and the golden age of Hollywood.   Next, Darren shares his review of the horror movie that has set the box office alight this season. Is Obsession, the debut feature film from writer/director Curry Barker, worth getting obsessed about? (Spoliler: Yes!!) And, finally, our host Richard discusses the latest film directed by Bradley Cooper. Is This Thing On? shares the post-marriage story of Will Arnett and Laura Dern - one of whom takes an unexpected turn into stand-up comedy.    That's what we've been watching... Listen in and then get in touch to tell us your thoughts about any of these movies, as well as what you've been watching recently.

episode 24hrs - A Day in a Movie cover

24hrs - A Day in a Movie

For this week's episode, our host is Neil and he wanted to explore the topic of those memorable movies in which the action all unfolds over a mere 24 hours (or less!). While this seems to begin with like quite a niche subgenre of movie, it turns out everything from a romance to a horror to a heist to an action classic can all benefit from the tight time constraint of the single-day movie. We talk about what makes them work so well, as well as our favourite examples, allowing us to cover an incredibly wide range of stories.  From Linklater's 'Before' trilogy; to one sweltering day in Brooklyn in Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing; to real time kitchen nightmare in Boiling Point; to everyone's favourite Christmas movie: Die Hard... what is it about the momentum and stakes of a 24hr (or less) movie that make them work so well?   Listen in to this week's episode of The Movie Mull and then get in touch to share your favourite examples - and what you love about them.

episode What We've Been Watching - Pretty Lethal, The Objective, Rental Family, 'Wuthering Heights' cover

What We've Been Watching - Pretty Lethal, The Objective, Rental Family, 'Wuthering Heights'

For this week's episode, your four friends over on the Movie Mull have a brand new quartet of reviews for you: four films that you can watch now on streaming or physical media - hopefully helping you out when you are faced with the endless scroll of doom, searching for your next watch! First up, Neil has a review for the action thriller newly arrived on Prime Video: Pretty Lethal, followed by Justin telling us all about the overlooked (justly or unjustly) 2008 science fiction horror film directed by Daniel Myrick: The Objective.  Then, Richard catches one of 2026's January cinema releases and something our mulls were eagerly anticipating: starring Brendan Fraser and written and directed by Hikari, the comedy/drama Rental Family is available now on Disney Plus and Blu-Ray. Finally, Darren shares his thoughts on the latest adaptation of 'Wuthering Heights', this one in quotation marks which might suggest the subjective form of adaptation in this latest movie from writer and director, Emerald Fennel which stars Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.  It's available now on Blu-Ray and Sky Cinema. It's another very varied menu of movies for you to choose from.  Listen in and then share your views, and let us know what you've been watching.
