Risperdal Scandals (J&J Pt 4)

Hello Poison Friends! We need to discuss Johnson & Johnson's misadventure into mental healthcare. Once their previous antipsychotic, Haldol, neared its patent expiration, the company plotted to come up with a new atypical antipsychotic that could take its place and earn them more money. They presented Risperdal as a safer and more effective treatment for schizophrenia, even though studies suggested otherwise. They priced the drug so high, that even medicaid could not afford to cover it for those with schizophrenia or bipolar with psychosis. When it became clear that this one population was not enough to earn them the money they really wanted, they pushed to have the drug approved for Dementia in elderly patients and for just about any sign of anxiety or agitation in children. Antipsychotics can have significant side effects and Risperdal has been labeled as toxic to those not diagnosed with schizophrenia because of these. Johnson&Johnson Pt3: Procrit

Hello our Poison Friends! We are back to fill you in on some more shady deeds from Johnson & Johnson's past. We have another Pharma guest appearance in this one, because Amgen was also involved in the synthetic erythropoietin business. Erythropoietin is the hormone released by the kidneys that stimulates red blood cell production. RBCs are produced in the blood marrow within bones. It always amazes me how the various systems of the body team up to keep everything balanced. Unfortunately, anemia (low RBCs/hemoglobin) is a common issue with kidney diseases, those on dialysis, and cancer patients. As such, these pharmaceutical companies sought to create synthetic erythropoietin to sell to these groups of patients. They succeeded and the treatment made billions of dollars in sales over the years. Relieving the effects of anemia in those with these already taxing conditions sounds great, but there were a number of problems. As it turns out, an increase in the hormone (and RBCs as a result) can lead to clotting, strokes, and heart attacks. Even worse, one researcher called the drug Miracle-Gro for tumors. Hello Poison Friends! Erin and I are taking a break from our breakdown of Johnson & Johnson's dark deeds, this week. Why? So we can celebrate America's Independence with stories of Founding Fathers and intrepid explorers of the nation and their encounters with poison. We are going a bit deeper into the medicinal chaos of Dr. Benjamin Rush, the only doctor to sign the Declaration of Independence. A great follower and teacher of "heroic medicine," he was a believer in excessive bloodletting, administering purgatives, and using blistering agents to make the ailing (literally) sweat it out. He also taught Captain Meriwether Lewis, of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition, all of his...remedies, should his team need them on the journey. Speaking of Meriwether Lewis, his death only 3 years after their return was full of suspicious details and conspiracy. Finally, we need to discuss the death of George Wythe, member of the constitutional convention, friend and mentor to Thomas Jefferson, lawyer, professor, and all around good guy (especially for the time period). Johnson & Johnson Pt. 2: Lawsuits and Lethal Lies

Hey Hey Poison Friends! We are bringing you part 2 of our look into Johnson & Johnson, and the drama is only escalating. We are discussing the expensive end to their use of talc in baby powders as well as the damage that it did to numerous women and likely others exposed to it. J&J apparently learned nothing from this, however. When people began dying of liver failure after taking too much Tylenol (acetaminophen) or because they had been moderate drinkers before taking it, they did their best to hide the facts from the public. When the FDA asked them to put a warning on Tylenol for its possible effects on the liver, they fought back for years. They made hundreds of millions of dollars on Tylenol, even though it was over the counter, and it was at one point the highest cause of liver failure in the US and in Britain. Then there was the infant's vs children's versions. In the midst of all of this, we need to look into their history of wooing doctors and politicians into their pockets as well as how their agenda for more money has led to bankruptcies and deaths across America for decades. Skeleton's In Their Closet: J&J Pt1

Hello Poison Friends! We are covering some long standing pharmaceutical companies and their deep dark secrets over the years, starting here with Johnson & Johnson. This company has been around for generations now, and they have garnered a reputation for their gentleness and trustworthiness--mainly through the sales of baby products and their marketing of such. However, the company was originally started in 1886, by three brothers looking to make a difference in the world with their medicated plasters and antiseptic bandages. Leadership of the company would pass out of the family only a few generations later, under some unfortunate circumstances. While they still have the same credo on their website, values shown in their actions, or lack thereof, changed entirely. In this part, we are looking at their history and the first of many scandals that stretched for decades until new science and methods of testing for toxic substances caught up with them. Unfortunately, once it was discovered that their baby powders (and other talc products) were contaminated with a cancer causing toxin, thousands of women had become ill and died from past exposure to them.
