S18E5 – Striving Without Strife, Part 5: Holy Friction – When God Uses Contention to Move His People [https://linktr.ee/Sogreatsalvation] No one enjoys conflict. When disagreements arise among believers, our first instinct is often to assume that something has gone terribly wrong. We naturally associate contention with carnality, division, or spiritual failure. While Scripture certainly warns against sinful strife, it also records moments when God, in His sovereignty, worked through disagreement to accomplish His purposes. Not all contention is created equal. Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly used tension, disagreement, and even sharp conflict to move His people forward. He overruled human weakness, differing perspectives, and difficult circumstances to advance His kingdom in ways no one could have anticipated. Consider the sharp disagreement between Paul and Barnabas over John Mark. Their contention was so great that they parted ways, yet instead of one missionary team, the gospel spread through two. What appeared to be a setback became an opportunity for greater ministry, and years later Paul would speak warmly of Mark as a valuable fellow laborer. God's purposes were not defeated by the conflict—they were accomplished through it. The Old Testament provides similar examples. Joseph's brothers acted out of jealousy and hatred, yet God used their evil intentions to preserve an entire nation during famine. The rivalry between Jacob and Esau, the tension between Moses and the people of Israel, and even the disagreements among Christ's own disciples became occasions for God to teach, refine, redirect, and reveal His glory. None of this excuses sinful behavior. Scripture never celebrates pride, bitterness, or selfish ambition. We are still commanded to pursue peace, to be gentle, to speak the truth in love, and to avoid the fleshly striving that destroys fellowship. Yet there is another lesson we often overlook: God is not hindered by conflict. He is able to take situations that seem chaotic and weave them into His sovereign plan. What we see as obstacles, He often uses as instruments. What appears to be interruption may actually be divine direction. Sometimes holy friction exposes hidden motives. Sometimes it clarifies truth. Sometimes it separates ministries so that each can accomplish a different purpose. Sometimes it humbles us, forcing us to depend more fully upon the Lord than upon our own wisdom. The question is not simply whether conflict exists, but whether we will respond to it in faith or in the flesh. Will disagreement make us bitter or better? Will it produce division rooted in pride, or growth rooted in humility? Will we seek to glorify ourselves, or trust that God can work even through uncomfortable circumstances? In this episode of Striving Without Strife, we'll examine biblical accounts where contention became a tool in God's hands—not because conflict is inherently good, but because our God is great enough to redeem even the failures and disagreements of His people. His providence is never threatened by human weakness. His purposes are never derailed by imperfect servants. And His wisdom often shines brightest in the very moments that appear most confusing to us. As we continue this series, we'll discover that while Christians are called to avoid sinful strife, we can also rest in the confidence that when conflict does arise, God is fully able to use even holy friction to refine His people, advance His work, and accomplish His perfect will.
