Going the Extra Mile: How NI Hospice brought joy to one family and inspired a 25-Mile challenge

To celebrate Volunteer’s Week, the Going the Extra Mile podcast highlights Elaine McBride, who has volunteered and fundraised for the Northern Ireland Hospice for nine years. Inspired by the exceptional respite care her son Sam receives there, Elaine works tirelessly to challenge the misconception that hospices are solely about end-of-life sadness, choosing instead to focus on the joy, light, and memories they provide. To mark the Children’s Hospice’s 25th anniversary, the family is taking on a 25-mile wheelchair walk with Sam. Though Sam will outgrow the children's respite service next year, Elaine remains a passionate advocate for the profound personal value and friendships that volunteering brings.
