Lindsay Clancy called crisis lines, went to emergency rooms, checked herself into hospitals, and took thirteen different medications from five different providers over four months. Her defense argues every one of those interventions made her worse instead of better. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Night Bird, sits down with Tony Brueski to examine the prescribing chain at the center of this case. The medications included benzodiazepines, antidepressants, an antipsychotic, and a sedative. Her husband Patrick told providers she was becoming a different person and begged them to stop. They increased the dose. The civil lawsuit filed by both Lindsay and Patrick describes providers who operated independently — no shared records, no coordinated treatment plan, no complete medication reconciliation. She was turned away from a suicide hotline because she had no specific plan. She waited three days in a psychiatric hospital before seeing a doctor. A nurse practitioner reportedly never returned a follow-up call from a referring facility. Shavaun addresses the question at the center of this segment — whether what happened to Lindsay is a catastrophic failure unique to her case or whether short appointments, revolving prescriptions, and fragmented provider networks are simply what postpartum mental health care looks like in this country. The answer determines whether the system bears responsibility for what happened to those three children. Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott discuss the Lindsay Clancy case.
