Duke Energy thanks 521,000 customers in the Carolinas for record heat wave support

Duke Energy is expressing its gratitude to customers across the Carolinas after the region's first major summer heat wave pushed electricity usage to record highs this week. On Tuesday June 24, the company set a new summer peak usage record of 35,269 megawatt-hours, surpassing the previous summer high of 34,439 megawatt-hours from July 2024. The all-time record remains 37,260 megawatt-hours, set in January 2025 during a cold snap. York County pauses construction at controversial Silfab Solar facility

Construction at the controversial Silfab Solar facility in York County is on pause after investigators toured the facility and found employees who aren't permitted for the ongoing project.   York County says that's a workplace violation.   Separately, the Silfab facility has drawn neighborhood backlash from concerned residents. Some folks living in the area say they're worried about air pollution and contaminants from the manufacturing process. Silfab has repeatedly said it meets all safety guidelines.   The controversy centers on community fears about chemicals used in solar panel manufacturing, particularly silane gas, which residents worry could pose risks to nearby schools and neighborhoods. Some families have already relocated rather than send their children to the new school. CMS modifies policies to assist students facing homelessness, living in foster care

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders approved major updates to how the district will support students experiencing homelessness and those in foster care.   Some students carry more than just a backpack to school. They also carry questions and concerns about where they’ll sleep. Now CMS is stepping in, making modifications and creating new policies for students facing difficult circumstances.   Some of the policies promise to be a steady hand for children navigating homelessness and foster care. The polices stress the importance of immediate enrollment and providing transportation without delay, even if they don’t have records like immunizations, proof of residency or previous school transcripts. Weather Impact Alert: Dangerous heat spreads across the Carolinas this week

The WCNC Charlotte Weather Impact Team had issued a Weather Alert for Monday through Thursday due to the threat of extreme heat.  Between Monday and Thursday, peak heat index values will near 102 degrees, if not higher.
