Dumb Stupid Birds
The superb bird-of-paradise is a forgettable black bird in New Guinea until it sweeps a stage, snaps into a hovering oval, and becomes a glowing face. Its feathers absorb up to 99.95 percent of light, a structural super-black measured at Harvard in 2018, rivaling materials built in labs. That black is not camouflage. It is studio lighting, evolved to make the colors beside it look impossibly bright, for an audience that rejects nearly everyone.
