Welcome to Forgotten Cinema! Each episode, Mike Field and Mike Butler highlight a film that for a variety of reasons was forgotten by audiences. Whether it be because a more popular movie was released at the same time or the movie simply didn’t catch on with an audience in the its initial run. We’ll discuss what we love about the movie or perhaps don’t love about it and decide whether the movie is worth a revisit.
Secondhand Lions
This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit "Secondhand Lions", the heartfelt coming-of-age story that blends tall tales, family, and a whole lot of charm. Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy this film, especially for its message and Robert Duvall's performance, who brings warmth, humor, and gravitas to the role. The movie’s themes about storytelling, masculinity, and choosing what to believe in life resonate strongly, giving the film a lasting emotional core. That said, the film is not without its flaws. Both Mikes take issue with the ending, including both the reshot version and the original intent, feeling that neither fully sticks the landing. Field also has some concerns with Haley Joel Osment’s performance in certain scenes, wondering if the direction may not have fully supported what the character needed. Even with those criticisms, "Secondhand Lions" remains a charming and memorable film that is easy to recommend. It may not be perfect, but its heart, performances, and message make it a story worth revisiting. 🔔 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell for more Forgotten Cinema content! 🎧 Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you listen to podcasts. ✨ Support us on Patreon for exclusive content: www.patreon.com/forgottencinema 🛍️ Grab some Forgotten Cinema merch: www.etsy.com/shop/ForgottenCinemaShop Check out our website: https://www.forgottencinemapodcast.com 0:00 - Introduction 3:19 - Film Facts 9:05 - Film Discussion 30:41 - Reviews 33:45 - Who Would You Recommend This To? 41:03 - Why Is This Forgotten? 43:30 - Plugs #ForgottenCinema #SecondhandLions #RobertDuvall #MichaelCaine #HaleyJoelOsment #MoviePodcast #FilmDiscussion #UnderratedMovies #ClassicFilms

Gravity
This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head into orbit with "Gravity", the Audience Choice winner for this season. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy the film, and it is easy to see why it earned the audience vote. While it may not hit quite the same heights as that first IMAX 3D experience, "Gravity" still holds up as an intense and visually stunning survival story. Sandra Bullock carries the film almost entirely on her own, delivering a performance that keeps the tension grounded and the stakes personal. George Clooney adds a memorable and charismatic presence that helps balance the film’s more intense moments. The Mikes do have a couple of small nitpicks. Butler feels the film loses a bit of momentum toward the end of the second act, and Field is not a big fan of the repeated space station problem Bullock’s character has to face. Still, these are minor issues in an otherwise gripping and well-crafted film. Tense, immersive, and technically impressive, "Gravity" remains a standout survival story and a deserving Audience Choice selection. What's your favorite "realistic" sci-fi film? Project Hail Mary - Now Showing
Join Mike Butler and Mike Field as they take a journey through space with Ryan Gosling and a talking rock and discuss the new smash hit sci-fi film "Project Hail Mary"! The Mikes (especially Butler) will discuss how much they love the film. Butler uses the word phenomenal a lot. They will though, talk about some issues they had with the film, regarding the hero's journey story being told and how a twist at the very end should maybe have happened a tad earlier in the film. Overall though, this is an excellent film, and the Mikes recommend everyone who wants to see an uplifting film that celebrates friendship and science go see "Project Hail Mary" in theaters! 🔔 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell for more Forgotten Cinema content! 🎧 Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you listen to podcasts. ✨ Support us on Patreon for exclusive content: www.patreon.com/forgottencinema 🛍️ Grab some Forgotten Cinema merch: www.etsy.com/shop/ForgottenCinemaShop Check out our website: https://www.forgottencinemapodcast.com #ForgottenCinema #ProjectHailMary #RyanGosling #AndyWeir #DrewGoddard #PhilLord #ChristopherMiller #SciFi #Rocky #NewRelease #FilmDiscussion
Soapdish
This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes dive into "Soapdish", the fast-paced comedy that pulls back the curtain on the chaotic world of daytime television. Both Mike Butler and Mike Field thoroughly enjoy this one. The cast is firing on all cylinders, with Kevin Kline and Sally Field delivering especially standout performances. The film is sharp, funny, and constantly entertaining, embracing the absurdity of soap operas while still celebrating what made them such a huge cultural force at the time. That said, the movie’s biggest strength may also be its biggest hurdle for modern audiences. Soap operas are no longer the dominant force they once were on American televisions, which may make some of the satire feel a bit dated. Even so, the humor, performances, and meta storytelling still land. By building a soap opera within the making of a soap opera, "Soapdish" creates a layered, self-aware comedy that remains a great time from start to finish. 🔔 Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell for more Forgotten Cinema content! 🎧 Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you listen to podcasts. ✨ Support us on Patreon for exclusive content: www.patreon.com/forgottencinema 🛍️ Grab some Forgotten Cinema merch: www.etsy.com/shop/ForgottenCinemaShop Check out our website: https://www.forgottencinemapodcast.com 0:00 - Introduction 3:04 - Film Facts 10:25 - Film Discussion 25:34 - Reviews 34:11 - Who Would You Recommend This To? 39:00 - Why Is This Forgotten? 41:22 - Plugs #ForgottenCinema #Soapdish #SallyField #KevinKline #Comedy #SoapOpera #WhoopiGoldberg #RobertDowneyJr #RDJ #90s #1990s #MoviePodcast #FilmDiscussion #UnderratedMovies #ClassicFilms
