While Jesus is not interested in philosophical questions, he points out that there is no automatic link between tragedies and sin. While debates are never the answer, bringing our pain to Jesus and coming with the faith we have (not the faith we don't have) is the way to go. Jesus highlights the crucial importance of prayer over any other strategy to cope with challenging circumstances.
