Acerca de Look Up, The Podcast

Look Up, The Podcast is a series for those interested in politics, community organizing, and grassroots movements. It was originally created for students in Political Science 1 with Professor Nicky Gonzalez Yuen at DeAnza College, but it's a podcast for any learner. Hosted and created by Teaching Assistants in the Political Science 1 at DeAnza College, we hope to bring a variety of voices to issues that impact all of us.

Episode 5 - Political Economy and the Environmental Crisis

Season 1 Episode 5 begins with our observations on student growth, followed by a discussion in which we revisit the environmental crisis and its root causes in the structures of corporate capitalism and markets that are neither “free” nor fair. This week we are also joined by De Anza College alumna Shiloh Ballard, South Bay policy luminary and executive director of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. What actions are local activists taking to build a more sustainable and resilient future? Listen in to find out. Featured in this episode: Nicky Gonzalez Yuen, Emily Datta, Katherine Hamilton, Justin Fry, Daniel Taveras, and special guest Shiloh Ballard. We turn our attention to race, racism, affirmative action, and the prospect of the first Black woman on the United States Supreme Court. Student interns and Nicky respond to the question: "What's been *your* experience of racism and internalized racism?" We are also joined this week by De Anza Alum and California State Assemblymember Evan Low, whose Assembly District 28 represents parts of San Jose, Cupertino, and surrounding cities. "Young, gay, & Asian? What's that been like as an elected official?" Featured in this episode: Nicky Gonzalez Yuen, Emily Datta, Katherine Hamilton, Daniel Taveras, and special guest Evan Low.
