The World Between Us
David Rush, a former senior executive at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) who held a top-secret security clearance, was arrested after federal agents uncovered a massive cache of stolen government assets hidden in his Virginia residence. During a raid executed on May 18, 2026, the FBI seized 303 gold bars, each weighing approximately one kilogram, valued at over $40 million. Alongside the gold, investigators recovered roughly $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches, predominantly Rolexes. The arrest on May 19 followed an internal CIA investigation. Between November 2025 and March 2026, Rush allegedly used his management position to request tens of millions of dollars in gold bars and significant amounts of foreign currency, claiming they were for work-related operational expenses. When the agency conducted an audit and could not locate the assets or determine their intended use, CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the case to the FBI for a law enforcement investigation. Rush has subsequently been charged with the criminal theft of public money.Beyond the multimillion-dollar theft, investigators discovered that Rush had fabricated his educational and military background for nearly two decades to climb the executive ladder and secure elite security clearances. Starting around 1997, he submitted forged academic transcripts, falsely claiming to hold degrees from Clemson University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Naval Postgraduate School.Rush also lied extensively about his military service. He falsely claimed to be a decorated Navy pilot and a graduate of the United States Air Force Test Pilot School, even asserting in a 2018 application that he directed a joint Army and Navy weapons testing organization. In reality, he enlisted in the Navy in 1997 and served in the Navy Reserves until he was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 2015, having never served as a military pilot. Despite his discharge, Rush continued to falsely inform the government that he was actively serving in the Reserves, which allowed him to fraudulently collect tens of thousands of dollars in military leave compensation.Rush is currently being held in federal custody, with a detention hearing scheduled for June 5 to determine if he will remain jailed ahead of his trial.
