Acerca de Winds of W Mountain

Well now, welcome, neighbor, to Winds on W Mountain, where tales as old as these hills—and twice as twisted—whisper their way to you, when the mood strikes and the wind's right. We ain't much for schedules; episodes waft in like smoke from a Shatagee Woods Adirondack Mountain campfire, carrying yarns spun by old-timers, tall tales shared by summer folk clutchin' their city ways, and the kind of uncanny musin's that make web-gawkers wonder if we’re history or hysteria. So, pull up a log, pour some milled cider, and let’s see if these winds are breathin' truth or just ghostin’ us all.

La Grande Conspiration des Orteils

📣 FROM THE STEAMBOAT DISPATCH — “La Grande Conspiration des Orteils” — Winds of W Mountain 📻🌊🐍🕰️ Program Notice: This recording contains a North Country folklore encounter involving minor injury, public commotion, case notes, and testimony from the Narrows. No official agency has claimed responsibility for the toes. Filed from Chateaugay Lake, with reference to Gloria Fernsworth of East Bellmont, old Ti-Jean, Donnelly’s tavern board, and one clipboard that appears to have enjoyed more authority than it deserved. In this episode: Toe-Bite Reports Narrows Bathing Panic Gloria’s Clipboard Evidence Donnelly’s Pickled Egg Offer The matter concerns certain small nips taken from summer toes, a theory involving “toe-based psychological operations,” and the sober fact that several respectable persons wore socks in the lake thereafter. Why only the toes? A line from the case note reads: “Government testin’ again.” That statement has not improved with age, though it has traveled well. Best received after the lamp is turned low, the receiver warmed up, and the line given a minute to clear its static. Those with business near the shore may lend an ear, then judge whether bare feet are still a sign of innocence. #WindsOfWMountain #SteamboatDispatch #ChateaugayLake #ShatageeWoods #GitaskogLore #NarrowsMystery #EastBellmont #NorthCountryFolklore #OldRadioYarns #ToeBiteCase 📻🌊🐍

Gray Braid and the Frozen Eye

📣 FROM THE STEAMBOAT DISPATCH — “Gray Braid and the Frozen Eye” — Winds of W Mountain 📻 🌫️ ❄️ Broadcast Notice: This episode contains testimony and case notes concerning a winter accident, disappearance, and folklore encounter below the Chateaugay Lakes. A trapper is separated from his party in February of ’87, with blood freezing black on his leggings and the river drawing him south under spruce boughs. Then he smells smoke—small smoke, hidden smoke—and finds a fire that seems to have been waiting before he ever got lost. Five, maybe six, Algonquin hunters stand in the clearing. They do not greet him. They do not turn him away. A gray-braided man binds the wound, feeds him broth, and asks the sort of question that can make a grown man wish he had remained in the snow. The case notes agree on one matter: something cried across the ice that night, and nobody moved until it was done. Why would woodsmen, hunters, and a half-frozen trapper all sit still for a sound no one would name? “The lake is not lonely. It does not want company.” Turn the lamp down, set the receiver where the static can breathe, and come hear what winter took, what the fire spared, and what Chateaugay Lake may have remembered. #WindsOfWMountain #SteamboatDispatchPodcast #ChateaugayLake #ShatageeWoods #FrozenEyeCase #NorthCountryFolklore #OldReceiverNights #TraplineTestimony #SpruceWoodsMystery #LakeFogLedger 📻

Le Grand Cri de Minuit

📣 FROM THE STEAMBOAT GAZETTE — “LE GRAND CRI DE MINUIT” — Winds of W Mountain 📻 🌲 🌫️ 🕰️ Broadcast Notice: This episode contains local testimony, case notes, and folklore encounters concerning the midnight cry heard around Chateaugay Lake. The recording also includes mention of official inquiry, odd conduct near the general store, and unsettled woods talk. At twelve o’clock midnight, no sooner and no later, one long cry rolls across Chateaugay Lake. Some place it in the deep timber. Some swear it came from a canoe. One sober party laid it square on Percy’s general-store roof, where the only witness found was a loose shutter and a cat wearing the face of a magistrate. The government men brought notepads, a spotlight, and that stiff manner common to fellows who expect trees to behave. East Bellmont answered with its usual public spirit: “Keeps the trees from wanderin’.” But who gives the cry, and why does the forest sometimes seem to answer? Set the receiver low, mind the static, and take the late hour as it comes. Draw near, neighbors; the Signal Desk has another queer reel from the lake country. #WindsOfWMountain #SteamboatDispatch #ChateaugayLake #ShatageeWoods #EastBellmont #NorthCountryFolklore #LakeWeather #OldSwitchboard #WMountainSignal #AdirondackMystery #PopevilleKilns #MidnightCry 📻 🌲 🕰️

episode The Lucifer Trapline artwork

The Lucifer Trapline

📣 FROM THE STEAMBOAT DISPATCH — “The Lucifer Trapline” 🪓🌫️🔥 Program Notice: This recording contains trapline testimony concerning missing men, damaged steel, cold-burn fire, and troubling statements taken from the Devil’s Channel line. Some listeners may prefer the lamp lit and the volume kept modest. Late October, 1879. Fred Shutts goes out with flint and steel. Darius Merrill goes in carrying seventy-five new traps from Malone and a sack of sulfur lucifers he is far too pleased with. Between Devil’s Channel and Spruce Hill, something takes an interest. The case notes are plain enough to spoil a man’s supper: bait gone, one trap bent clean out of sense, and long grooves in the frost where no boot, paw, or sled-runner had any business being. By evening at Split-Toe Ledge, somebody says the fire burned blue and the snow went the wrong way. From the testimony comes one line worth setting aside for a late hour: “There’s a thing in them woods don’t like metal.” Was Fred warning the boy, or himself? Set the headphones on proper. Let the static settle. Then come hear what the old line held, what it dropped, and what kept walking after the winter should have finished with it. 🌲📻 #WindsOfWMountain #SteamboatDispatch #TheLuciferTrapline #DevilsChannel #SpruceHill #SplitToeLedge #FredShutts #DariusMerrill #NorthCountryBroadcast #TraplineCase #ColdFireReport #ShatageeLore 🔥🪵

Malone Jail Holds Ancient Debt

📣 FROM THE STEAMBOAT DISPATCH — “Malone Jail Holds Ancient Debt” — Winds of W Mountain 🏚️❄️🌫️🪵 Broadcast Notice--On This Recording: Reports of shadowy figures in the Malone jail cells and an expert probe into what rests beneath the prison foundation. In the iron grip of Malone’s winter-locked jail, the Yappel Three discover their confinement holds more than cold stone and iron. Ed Yappel, that brute of old, falls silent, his eyes deepening into abysses where something stirs unseen. A guard recalls the first scream: “It was behind me. A shadow. Or no—something wearing a shadow like a man wears a coat.” The warden, no stranger to hard men, sends for Thaddeus Pell and his humming device of wires and glass. Pell pauses at the walls. “This place is a gateway,” he states, naming the site Makwa-dak, long known to the Abenaki as the Place of the Buried. “He is not alone in there.” What watches when the wicked are caged with the forgotten? Pull close to the signal as the North Country night deepens—the Dispatch brings the stones’ own testimony in this Winds of W Mountain podcast! 🏚️ #WindsOfWMountain #SteamboatDispatch #MaloneJail #AdirondackLegends #AbenakiFolklore #YappelThree #PrisonGateway #ThaddeusPell #BuriedBeneath #NorthCountryShadows #SpectersBehindBars #JailDisturbance 🌫️
