Houston Congressional District 18 Forum: Community Candidate Conversations

Today, we are here at the Judson Robinson Senior Community Center, where environmental justice groups hosted a rare and powerful event: a *Speed Date with Candidates* forum for Texas Congressional District 18 — a district that currently winds around Harris County, where pollution, flood risk, and economic inequality hit hardest. As one of the oldest Master planned communities in East Houston, the area is well known for its historic voter turnout. Currently, voter turnout has dropped to 54 percent, but the landscape of participation on October 11th is enthusiastic. In a few minutes, we will collect perspectives from candidates and community members who participated in a series of question answers to learn more about their leadership plans to address CD18’s community infrastructure, health, and environmental equity plaguing communities of color. Transparency is what community members are seeking to measure whether or not their ideal candidate is a good match their ideas for what is best in their district.

In this episode, we will begin our conversation by discussing the history of gerrymandering in Texas. Let's first establish a shared understanding of the issue. Gerrymandering refers to the manipulation of electoral district boundaries for political gain, often to favor one party over another or to disadvantage certain racial or ethnic groups. This practice can significantly impact the representation of various communities in the political process.

By examining the intersection of policy, and environmental justice, this podcast aims to amplify the voices of those who are disproportionately affected through weatherization. Clean air, water and land are on watch because resources are scarce due to the lack of adequate representation that has been repositioned due to redistricting. As we fight for a sustainable future, this podcast will take a deeper dive into in previous reports reviewed from the Environmental Protection Agency, its emphasis on climate change and pollution outcomes that disproportionately affect low-income communities making representation a crucial part of the narritavie to address these issues.

Education & Defending Democracy

In this episode, we examine the intersection of politics and social justice in public education, exploring how shifting policy and fractured representation deepen inequities across Houston ISD with educator and Houston Education Association president Michelle Williams. We unpack how withdrawn federal oversight, stalled DOE responses, and mid-decade redistricting have intensified the disenfranchisement of English language learners, special education students, and African American students. As congressional protections fade and state leaders pull back support, educators and communities are left to navigate a system that no longer serves its most vulnerable. This episode takes a focused look at these barriers and underscores why reading between the lines of political action—and staying civically engaged—is essential to protecting public education.
