In this episode two Austin ISD educators were recognized at the 2026 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. Megan Vasquez of Becker Elementary received the Leadership Award, bringing home $10,000 for herself and $10,000 for her campus. Alasin DeVeny of Joslin Elementary earned the Lifetime Achievement Award, which includes $25,000 herself and $25,000 for the school. Spotlight on student achievement as graduation season begins, the district is highlighting seniors like Rami Kashakhi of Akins Early College High School. Kashakhi will spend the next year in Morocco studying Arabic before attending the University of Texas at Austin for chemical engineering in 2027. The district also celebrated academic milestones at the Austin Community College Chancellor's Reception. Projections for the Spring and Summer 2026 sessions include the awarding of 116 Associate Degrees, 37 Level 1 Certificates, and two Occupational Skills Awards to Austin ISD students. And May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This year’s theme is "You Matter Here". Our focus this week is You Belong Here. Students may participate in activities that promote kindness, inclusion, and connection. En este episodio dos maestras del Austin ISD fueron homenajeadas en los Premios H-E-B a la Excelencia en la Educación de 2026. Megan Vásquez, de la Primaria Becker, recibió el Premio al Liderazgo, con el que se llevó a casa 10,000 dólares para ella y otros 10,000 dólares para su escuela. In this episode of the Austin ISD Podcast, we share the superintendent’s update on school consolidations and boundary changes, student academic milestones, and a high-stakes culinary competition. Superintendent Matias Segura provided an update on school closures and district boundary work [https://www.austinisd.org/announcements/2026/04/26/update-school-closures-and-district-boundary-work-en-espanol].  * The district's focus is now shifting toward districtwide boundary changes and the alignment of feeder patterns.  * To begin this work, the district will use previous drafts as a starting point and invites the community to participate in a virtual Boundary Process Kickoff Meeting on May 11 [https://www.austinisd.org/calendar/events/2026/05/11/boundary-process-virtual-kick-info-sessions] from 6 to 7:30 p.m.. Austin ISD sees 7% jump in postsecondary readiness market since 2022 [https://www.austinisd.org/announcements/2026/04/17/austin-isd-sees-7-jump-postsecondary-readiness-market-2022-en-espanol]. Austin ISD juniors and seniors are making major strides in College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR).  * For the 2024-25 school year, more than 50% of 11th and 12th graders successfully completed a college credit course, a nearly 7 percentage point increase since 2022 that surpasses the district's own milestone targets.  * This "readiness" is achieved through various pathways, including passing Texas Success Initiative (TSI) criteria, earning associate’s degrees, and completing high-level coursework like AP, IB, and dual-credit courses. Culinary Competition: The Kerbey Lane Challenge The spotlight shines on the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs through a collaboration with Kerbey Lane All Day Cafe.  * Culinary students from Austin and Bowie High Schools competed to have an original dish featured on the restaurant's menu. While teams presented creative recipes like "Can’t Marry Me Chicken" and "Cajun Shrimp Tostadas," Austin High School’s Salmon Scampi ultimately took the win.  Supporting Student Mental Health With May designated as Mental Health Awareness Month, the district is highlighting resources for students facing the stress of school transitions.  * On Wednesday, April 29, "Parent U" will host a session titled "Thriving Through Transitions: Mental Health and School Changes [https://www.austinisd.org/calendar/events/2026/04/29/thriving-through-transitions-mental-health-school-changes]". This event is designed to help parents support students emotionally as they move between elementary, middle, and high school or head off to college.
