The band consists of four members: Bono (lead vocals), The Edge (lead guitar), Adam Clayton (bass), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums). U2’s sound has evolved over time, spanning rock, alternative rock, pop rock, and post-punk styles. They are one of the best-selling music artists in history, with roughly 150–170 million records sold worldwide. U2 has won 22 Grammy Awards and has been inducted into both the UK Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band is also known for activism, particularly in human rights and social justice causes. Their early breakthrough came with albums like Boy (1980), featuring the song “I Will Follow,” and War (1983), which included “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “New Year’s Day.” The Joshua Tree (1987) is one of their most acclaimed albums, featuring hits like “With or Without You,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and “Where the Streets Have No Name.” Achtung Baby (1991) marked a major stylistic shift toward darker, more experimental and industrial sounds, and included songs like “One,” “Mysterious Ways,” and “The Fly.” Both The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are considered landmark albums, with critical acclaim, major commercial success, and lasting influence on rock music. Takeaways for Hamnet: Hamnet is a 2025 historical drama directed by Chloé Zhao, based on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell. The story explores the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway. The film stars Paul Mescal as Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as Agnes, with Buckley delivering an award-winning performance. The movie received 8 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, though it did not win that category. Jessie Buckley won Best Actress, with her performance widely praised as exceptional and emotionally powerful. A key emotional foundation of the story is the death of the Shakespeares’ young son, Hamnet, at age 11 due to the plague. Agnes is portrayed as a mystical, nature-connected figure with knowledge of herbal medicine and folklore. The narrative follows Shakespeare’s struggle between family life in Stratford and his growing theatrical career in London. Shakespeare’s experiences with grief over Hamnet’s death inspire his writing of Hamlet, which becomes a central thematic link in the film. The film’s climactic stage scene connects Agnes emotionally to the play, culminating in her realization that Hamlet is a tribute to her son, leading to a powerful emotional resolution. Please join me this week as I discuss the late, great Dave Brubeck and the killer movie Silence of the Lambs. Takeaways for Dave Brubeck: Dave Brubeck is a highly influential jazz pianist and composer, best known for his role in the cool jazz movement and his use of unusual time signatures and rhythmic experimentation. He was born in Concord, California in 1920 and developed a style that blends jazz with classical and blues influences. In 1951, he formed the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which became his most successful group. The classic lineup featured saxophonist Paul Desmond, bassist Eugene Wright, and drummer Joe Morello. The band was historically significant as one of the first racially integrated jazz groups, which caused them to lose or cancel some performances due to segregation-era venue policies. Brubeck’s music ranges from refined to energetic and reflects both his classical training and improvisational approach. His 1959 album Time Out was a major commercial success, reaching #2 on the Billboard charts and becoming the first jazz album to sell over a million copies. The hit single Take Five became the first jazz single to sell over a million copies and is notable for its 5/4 time signature. Another standout piece, Blue Rondo à la Turk, mixes complex time signatures inspired by rhythms Brubeck encountered while traveling in Turkey. Brubeck’s influence extended into popular music; artists like Steely Dan and Donald Fagen were inspired by his work, including Fagen’s album The Nightfly, which references Brubeck directly in its lyrics. Takeaways for Silence of the Lambs: The Silence of the Lambs is a 1991 psychological horror thriller directed by Jonathan Demme, based on the novel by Thomas Harris. The film was a major box office success, earning nearly $300 million on a $19 million budget. It made awards history by winning the “Big Five” at the Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It is the only horror film ever to win Best Picture, and it launched a franchise including sequels, prequels, and TV adaptations. The film stars Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee working in behavioral science. Anthony Hopkins plays Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a highly intelligent but dangerous cannibalistic psychiatrist imprisoned in a high-security facility. The antagonist Buffalo Bill (Jame Gumb) is a serial killer who kidnaps victims and skins them as part of a disturbing “human suit” obsession. Clarice is assigned to consult with Hannibal Lecter to help capture Buffalo Bill, leading to a manipulative psychological exchange between them. Hannibal provides cryptic clues, while also extracting personal trauma from Clarice, deepening the psychological tension between them. In the climax, Clarice tracks down Buffalo Bill, rescues Catherine Martin, and kills him in a dark confrontation using tactical awareness and situational advantage.
