Aidan MacCarthy crawls out of his shelter, swims the Urakami river and immediately gets to work treating the survivors of the worst single act of destruction in the history of warfare. On August 15th the Emperor of Japan announces unconditional surrender. MacCarthy assembles his fellow prisoners in the compound and announces the news in a voice faltering with emotion. They cry, hug each other, drop to their knees and thank God. Then begins the long journey home. Through Okinawa, Manila, San Francisco, across Canada and across the Atlantic. He arrives in Dublin at the end of November 1945 to news that will break his heart. But Aidan MacCarthy has survived everything the world has thrown at him.
