Crimes That Haunt Us
On a warm June night in 1996, 20-year-old law student Janet Murgatroyd went out celebrating the end of her university exams with friends in Preston, Lancashire. Hours later she vanished during her walk home. CCTV captured Janet's final known movements through Preston's streets. Witnesses later reported seeing a man in a white shirt arguing with a woman matching her description near Penwortham Bridge. The following day, Janet's battered body was discovered in the River Ribble. What followed was one of Lancashire's most complex and controversial murder investigations. Detectives interviewed over 1,000 people, pursued countless leads, released CCTV appeals and even secured a conviction.
