Ep.1 - Dall'Etiopia agli Stati Uniti

Julie Mehretu nasce nel 1970 in Etiopia, ad Addis Abeba, dove trascorre la sua infanzia. A causa dell’instabilità politica del paese, all’età di sette anni è costretta a trasferirsi con la famiglia negli Stati Uniti. Gli anni ‘80 sono il periodo della crescita, mentre gli anni ‘90 della rivoluzione digitale fanno da sfondo al suo apprendistato pittorico. Mehretu si afferma definitivamente nel nuovo millennio, grazie a uno stile potente e inconfondibile, dove confluiscono e si smarriscono diverse influenze e fonti d’ispirazione, dall’architettura ai grandi eventi storici del nostro tempo. Nel suo cammino, tuttavia, non è mai sola, ma sempre accompagnata da un gruppo di amici e artisti, quelli della comunità di Denniston Hill. Entreremo nella storia di Mehretu grazie alla sua voce e con un contributo di Francesca Sibàni, editor di Africa per Internazionale, e una testimonianza dell’artista Paul Pfeiffer. Ep.2 - À Venise, ensemble

Dans ce deuxième épisode, nous irons au cœur de l’exposition "Ensemble" au Palazzo Grassi et nous regarderons de près quelques œuvres de Julie Mehretu, guidés par sa voix et par le commentaire de la conservatrice Caroline Bourgeois. Nous explorerons les œuvres des autres artistes réunis par l’exposition avec le témoignage de l’artiste Paul Pfeiffer, ami et membre de la communauté de Mehretu. De plus, grâce à la voix de Jason Moran, pianiste et compositeur jazz de renommée internationale, nous essaierons de pénétrer un aspect intrigant de la peinture de Mehretu : son lien secret avec la musique.

Ep.2 - In Venice, together

In this second episode, we’ll discuss the Ensemble exhibition at Palazzo Grassi and focus on a few of the works by Julie Mehretu, with the help of her voice and a comment from the curator Caroline Bourgeois. We’ll explore the works of the other artists in the exhibition, and listen to the words of Paul Pfeiffer (friend and part of Mehretu’s tight community). We’ll also hear the voice of Jason Moran (pianist and international jazz composer), and explore a splendid aspect of Mehretu’s painting: her secret tie to music.

Ep.1 - From Ethiopia to the United States

Julie Mehretu is born in Ethiopia in 1970, at Addis Abeba, where she spends her early childhood. Due to political instability in the country, she’s forced to leave for the USA with her family. The eighties are a period of growth, while during the digital revolution of the nineties she apprentices as a painter. Mehretu finally establishes herself in the new millennium, with a powerful iconic style, several influences and sources of inspiration - from architecture to the great historic events of our time. Throughout her career, she’s never alone, but collaborates with a group of friends and artists - those of the community of Denniston Hill. We’ll hear Mehretu tell us her story herself, and also listen to Francesca Sibàni (editor of Africa for the Italian weekly Internazionale) and the artist Paul Pfeiffer.

Julie Mehretu naît en 1970 en Éthiopie, à Addis Abeba, où son enfance s’écoule. A cause de l’instabilité politique du le pays, elle est menée à déménager et s’installer aux États-Unis à l’âge de sept ans. Elle grandit au cours des années quatre-vingt, tandis que les années 90 de la révolution numérique se déroulent en toile de fond de son apprentissage pictural. Mehretu s’affirme définitivement [en tant qu’artiste] dans le nouveau millénaire par sa touche puissante et incomparable, dans laquelle plusieurs influences et sources d’inspiration se rencontrent et se perdent, de l’architecture jusqu’aux grands évènements historiques de notre temps. Cependant, elle n’a jamais été seule sur son chemin, mais toujours accompagnée par un groupe d’amies et d’artistes, ceux de la communauté de Denniston Hill. Nous allons plonger dans l’histoire de Mehretu grâce à sa voix ainsi qu’à la contribution de Francesca Sibàni, éditrice pour l’Afrique de [l’hebdomadaire italien] Internazionale, et un témoignage de l’artiste Paul Pfeiffer.
