Episode Ep.11 - Do This For A Healthy Brain Cover

Ep.11 - Do This For A Healthy Brain

I sit down with my mother Lynn and my brother-in-law and talk science. He shares some of the studies he’s been apart of and educates us on one of the most effective tools for a healthy brain. Dr. Jay M. J. R. Carr (Researcher)  Dr. Jay Carr is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus). His work focuses on the mechanisms governing blood flow to the brain and how it adapts to various physiological stresses.  * Primary Research Focus: He investigates cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR)—the ability of brain blood vessels to dilate or constrict in response to changes in carbon dioxide (𝐶𝑂2) and oxygen levels. * Key Findings (2025–2026): * Hypoxic Vasodilation: His research details how the brain maintains oxygen delivery during low-oxygen states (hypoxia) through mechanisms involving nitric oxide and potassium channels. * Exercise and Brain Health: He has explored how different modes of exercise, such as interval training versus continuous aerobic exercise, impact cerebral endothelial function. * Lactate Metabolism: Recent 2025 studies involve how the brain preferentially uses lactate for fuel during intense exercise or infusion, which may help preserve glucose for other brain functions.
