Gary Talley of Box Tops Background and Bio

Born in Memphis, TN in 1947. Gary was born into a musical family. He tells about constantly being exposed to music from his parents, the radio, records, and local Memphis musicians, including Elvis, Booker T and the MGs, and Travis Wammack. He tells about his first guitar and learning how to play and the many genres of music that influenced him, including gospel. country, folk, bluegrass, early rock n’ roll, blues, and R&B.

Here’s a summary of our Box Tops appearance at the Dallas -Ft. Worth Pop Festival in September of 1967. It was the second huge American pop festival ( after Monterey Pop.) We meet The Doors, The Standells, The Electric Prunes, etc. and we meet our first hippies. There weren’t many in Memphis at the time.

Seeing Jimi Hendrix

In 1968, Steve Paul, the owner of “ The Scene” (a famous New York music venue ) told us that Jimi Hendrix was going to come to the club and sit in that night. Cleve Dupin ( our road manager) and I jumped in a cab and high-tailed it down there. This podcast tells about what we saw and heard that night. It was an unforgettable experience !!
