Leadership Fitness in 5 Minutes with Gary Slyman
Every team has a story—but how often do we take the time to tell it? In this episode, I introduce an exercise called The Epic Story of Us, a powerful team-building activity that helps leaders strengthen relationships, build empathy, and create a shared understanding of how the team has evolved over time. Using three simple elements—People, Timeline, and Events—your team will work together to map its history. Team members share when they joined the organization, why they came, and what they experienced as the culture at that time. As the timeline grows, the team begins to see how people and key events have shaped the organization. The conversation doesn't end with the past. Leaders can use the exercise to ask: * What is our culture today? * What should our culture become? * What experiences have shaped the way we work together? The result is greater empathy, stronger connections, and a shared vision for the future. If you're looking for a practical way to bring your team together, build trust, and create alignment, this exercise is a great place to start. Challenge: How could you structure this activity for your own team and begin building your Epic Story of Us?
