In folklore, a familiar was believed to be a spiritual companion. Often described as a black cat. Sometimes a raven. A toad. A dog. Even a shadow. In 16th and 17th century Europe, during witch trials, people believed witches had animal spirits that helped them perform magic. These creatures were said to whisper secrets. Carry messages. Protect their owner. Or act as an extension of their power.
