ピューリッツァー賞作家、ジュンパ・ラヒリさんの『見知らぬ場所』を再読しました。 大学生の頃に出会って以来、私の人生に寄り添い続けているオールタイム・ベストの一冊です。 今回は、物語の背景にある移民家族の葛藤や、第二部の主人公カウシクの旅を通して感じた「根を下ろすこと」の難しさについてお話しします。 私自身がヨーロッパで感じた「常に外国人として見られる重み」と、逆にカリフォルニアで感じた「自分を説明しなくていい安心感」との間で揺れ動いた正直な気持ちを、そのまま言葉にしてみました。 今日も聴いてくださって、ありがとうございます。 次回のエピソードは英語でお届けします！

"I wish I’d never been born." Following up on Heaven, I’m diving into Mieko Kawakami’s "Breasts and Eggs", a book named one of the best novels of the year by TIME and The New York Times. I was particularly moved by the second half of the story, where the protagonist, Natsuko, confronts the complex ethics of choosing to become a mother on her own. From the dilemma of bringing a life into this world to the vivid, bittersweet atmosphere of Osaka, I’m sharing the thoughts that have been spinning in my head ever since.
