Plus, our hosts discuss potential vacation plans and other tools on how to assess risks when planning. The tips for this week? Host Ben Adair is joined by Owen Muir M.D., Michelle Bernabe RN, and Dr. Will Osei from Brooklyn Minds to hear from recent college and high school graduates about the difficulties of transitioning into a new beginning. The tips for this week? Give yourself the space to grieve what you missed or might end up missing. If you are starting college in the fall, reach out to college councilors at your schools to get a head start on creating a relationship with that support system. If you had to move back in with your parents, sit down and discuss new boundaries where you can learn to relate to each other differently! (You can read the article Michelle mentioned here: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-06-12/adulthood-interrupted-by-coronavirus ) At the top of the show we listed some great Black Trans orgs. Host Ben Adair is joined by Owen Muir M.D., Michelle Bernabe RN, and Dr. Will Osei from Brooklyn Minds to talk about practicing safe sex , the effects of COVID-19 on the brain, and racism within our communities. Additionally, we’d like to address our own privilege and provide resources for our non-Black listeners to better understand the roles we play in systemic racism and the roles we can play in supporting the fight against it. We acknowledge that we have a lot of work to do ourselves as a team and in our effort to do so, we’re highlighting Aware-LA, an organization focused on organizing and educating White people on anti-racism. Here is the link to a very cool toolbox they’ve created to help us understand and do the work: https://www.awarela.org/our-models Here is the link to NYC Gov's Safer Sex and Covid-19 Guidelines: https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/imm/covid-sex-guidance.pdf -------- If you want to share your thoughts on this episode with us, or share how you are holding up with everything going on— you can text or leave us a voicemail at: 858-255-1770 DISCLAIMER: Listening to a podcast is not a substitute for getting real help. Host Ben Adair is joined by Owen Muir M.D., Lauren Moy, and Danny Ruiz (MCH-LP) From Brooklyn Minds to speak with guest Fiona Lowenstein on the ways that we all can better support COVID-19 survivors.. Fiona is a journalist and a foundering member of Body Politics- a queer feminist wellness collective. support group: https://www.wearebodypolitic.com/covid19 body politic: https://www.wearebodypolitic.com/ Together they answer questions related to feelings of isolation, the effects of COVID-19 on the brain, trauma response and how to focus energy on radical acceptance. Additionally, we want to highlight a Twitter thread that we saw recently posted by @mayarichrdsun in light of the sweeping acknowledgment of racial bias within the police and society happening all over the country after the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black folks. We understand that at this time, the Black community is struggling with grief, anger, anxiety, exhaustion, etc., which is why we are boosting maya's post highlighting mental health orgs specifically for the Black community. The Pandemic Check-in team is joined this week by Paul Vincent, a celebrity trainer and founder of Altus Sports Institute that specializes in health and well-being. Paul shares some breathing/body techniques that he has learned through years of training with various indigenous cultures that reduce anxiety and help get you ready for a restful sleep. Paul's biggest tip to stay healthy during this time— a strong morning and bedtime routine that shifts your energy between resting and becoming active and vice versa! Also if you have kids, Paul's advice is to make stretching fun by acting like different animals and then shake it all off with a big dance party to expend some energy! As always, we want to hear from you. Was this advice helpful? What happened when you tried it out? Is there a way that you are coping that we have not discussed that you think would help others or are you struggling with something and want to discuss it with us?
