Alien 3 (1992) – In Defense of David Fincher's Grimy Prison Masterpiece It's easy to tear down movies, but it's way more FUN to ENJOY movies! Welcome to another episode of Slept-On Cinema, hosted by Stan Steamer and GrobeStreet. This week, we are diving into the 1992 sci-fi thriller Alien 3. Despite holding a Rotten Tomatoes score of 44% from critics and 46% from audiences, we argue that this might be the highest quality film we've ever covered on the podcast! We are officially kicking off our first-ever triple feature (which will eventually culminate in Alien vs. Predator) by defending David Fincher's bold directorial debut. Episode Highlights & Segments: * The Breakdown: We discuss how a 27-year-old David Fincher transitioned from music videos to helming this massive franchise, and how intense studio meddling ultimately impacted his original vision. * BOLO (Be On the Lookout): We highlight the best background details, including the discordant 20th Century Fox intro soundtrack, barcodes on shaved heads, the recurring corporate drinking bird, the first use of alien POV shots, and the sheer, inescapable dampness of the prison planet. * Drink to Pair: Stan Steamer recommends sipping a peaty Scotch to perfectly capture the damp, smoky, and earthy essence of the film. GrobeStreet counters with suggestions of Guinness or straight black coffee. * The Draft: We draft our absolute favorite elements from the film. Picks include the incredibly contained yet cavernous sense of dread, the retro-futuristic low-tech aesthetic, and Sigourney Weaver’s badass, franchise-carrying performance as Ellen Ripley. * Sleeper Picks: We celebrate the satisfyingly gross milky liquid that squirts out of the cyborgs, as well as Ripley's incredibly believable, heavy-hitting right hook. * Superlative (Grimiest Thing): We debate the grimiest aspects of the movie. We narrowed it down to the horrific, bone-rattling sound design during Newt's autopsy and the disgustingly stained infirmary pillow Ripley wakes up on. * Anti-Pick: We can all agree that having an alien growing inside of you sounds like an absolutely awful experience. * Bumper Sticker Line: We highlight the most quotable lines, including the vague but evocative, "This whole place is a basement," and the ultimate clapback: "I'm not interested in your opinion, because you are not in full possession of the facts." * One Change to a Blockbuster: We explore how finding a creative way to keep Newt alive (or spinning her and Hicks off to safety) might have appeased the fanbase and changed the film's initial box-office reception. * Spin-Off Ideas: We pitch our best spin-offs! What if we gave David Fincher a complete do-over with total creative control, or created a prequel focusing on the true backstory of Charles S. Dutton’s character, Dylan the Preacher? * Loose Ends: We wrap up with final thoughts and trivia, including calculating Ripley's hypersleep age to be 87, and discussing the iconic, face-to-face infirmary scene that Fincher and Weaver filmed against direct studio orders! ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast.
