SWOP Behind Bars Advocacy from the Margins
There is a moment many marginalized people eventually experience inside progressive spaces when they realize the inclusion was always conditional. The rainbow flags were real. The slogans were real. The diversity statements were real. The sense of welcome, at least initially, was real. But the solidarity had limits that were never written down anywhere, never stated outright, never acknowledged in any of the carefully worded mission statements. The limits only became visible when someone tested them - usually not by doing anything dramatic, but simply by continuing to exist in ways that became politically inconvenient for the institutions that had been celebrating them. You could belong right up until your existence created complications.
