The Orioles are hot! They welcomed the Rays into town and exacted some sweep revenge, taking all 3 from their division rival, before splitting 4 games with Toronto. The starting pitching has been phenomenal, the bats have come to life, but the bullpen almost turned a 4 game split into a series lost while also keeping the team from a series win and a possible sweep. The Orioles looked like driftwood in Tampa Bay, but managed to come home and take 2 of 3 from Detroit (barring a late-inning comeback in game 3). The Orioles will hit 43 years without so much as a World Series appearance, let alone victory, come this October. And while only one team wins every year, we're reaching Cleveland Indians/Guardians, Seattle, pre-2004 Boston, pre-2016 Cubs territory here. Baltimore fans are loyal and die hard, and yet somehow have been cursed to watch a middling franchise for going on a half-decade. Frankly, watching this team has become a chore, despite the victory today. They win a series, then lose a series, and the cycle repeats. Frankly, it's gotten to the point where when they win, we say, "Who cares?" Is there hope on the horizon? Maybe. But something needs to change, and fast. The Orioles salvaged the series finale in Oakland on Sunday after dropping the first two games, finishing the week 3-4 overall. Now they return to OPACY for a 3-game set against the Yankees, just one week after being swept in a 4-game series in New York. The players continue to preach patience and confidence, but sitting five games under .500 in mid-May, heading into another matchup with a division rival that has already looked clearly superior, is far from what the decision-makers in the Warehouse envisioned this offseason. Colton Cowser went from 5th overall pick and ROY runner-up to 5th outfielder. Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg haven't sniffed a big league diamond.
