The Daily Birthday History
December 31st marks the end of the year and is celebrated around the world as New Year's Eve. This date is known by many names, including Saint Sylvester's Day and Old Year’s Day/Night. It is the last day of the year in the Gregorian calendar, and the following day is January 1st, the first day of the new year. Interestingly, in 1844, the Philippines skipped December 31st entirely to align the country with the rest of Asia. Also, in 1994, Kiribati skipped the date to adjust time zones in the Phoenix Islands and Line Islands. December 31st is also the seventh of the Twelve Days of Christmas and the sixth day of Kwanzaa.
