In which the ominous counting-house on the wharf becomes a stage for Mr Quilp’s bizarre and fiery humour, as he enacts a furious and peculiar performance upon a grotesque figure-head while his uneasy legal adviser toils under his formidable and capricious presence. The two converse over strong spirits and troubling business concerning a troublesome lodger, with Quilp’s malign enjoyment casting a sombre shadow over their dark dealings in that shadowy, treacherous haunt.
