Human beings fear real change, because change entailsuncertainty and risk. Society prefers to maintain unjust systemsrather than take a chance on the unknown. Institutions andcivilizations have inertia; collective fear of changing the currentorder persists unless absolutely necessary. So, even when weunderstand the nature of structural violence, we choose to let itpersist—because true change is what we fear the most.
