In which the lone narrator faces the fierce and strange Beast Folk with a mixture of resolve and desperation, wielding a cracked whip and a nearly empty revolver to assert a fragile authority amidst uncertainty and danger. He retreats to solitude along the beach, grappling with his apprehensions and the irrevocable changes wrought upon the island, all the while cautiously observing his strange companions and seeking sustenance in the ruins of a once-feared place.
