The Le Fanu Library
In which Harry Fairfield, wearied by a long day and the warmth of brandy by the fire, falls into a deep sleep only to be roused by Tom Ward to an unexpected conversation with the old Squire of Wyvern, whose gruff reflections turn upon bygone days and the tangled affairs of family and fortune. The Squire, with a mixture of bitterness and resignation, contemplates the shifting fortunes of his house and the inevitable changing of times, dismissing the coming disputes with a rugged, almost jocular disdain.
