The Snark Side: The Chaotic World of TLC, Bravo, and Reality TV
It’s Season 3, Episode 3 of HBO’s House of the Dragon! 🐲🩸 The reality of sitting on the Iron Throne just hit Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen like a ton of structural dragonglass, and the Snark Squad is breaking down an hour packed with massive psychological burdens, a bankrupt treasury, and an absolute masterclass in military deception. Rhaenyra’s initial days of rule in King's Landing are proving that taking the capital is the easy part—ruling it when the populace is actively starving and there's only a week's worth of gold left in the vaults is a total logistical nightmare. To make matters worse, her baseline internal defenses are fracturing. Lord Corlys Velaryon is aggressively demanding that the crown fully legitimize his bastard sons, Addam and Alyn, but a deeply stressed Rhaenyra flatly rejects the system update, fearing it will completely compromise the perceived legitimacy of her own heirs. While Rhaenyra tries to govern with her late father's tempered, peaceful ideals, the Rogue Prince Daemon Targaryen is out here running a completely different, highly aggressive script. Backed by three massive dragons, Daemon completely blindsides the Green host, forcing an apparently panicked Lord Ormund Hightower into an immediate surrender. Daemon even demands Ormund’s young ward, Prince Daeron Targaryen, as a high-stakes hostage. Rhaenyra spends the entire episode wringing her hands over the ethics of executing her teenage half-brother, eventually deciding to compromise by sending him to the Wall for life—only to bring Queen Alicent in for a reunion and realize the absolute horror truth: the kid they locked in the cells is a complete imposter. Ormund Hightower played Team Black like an absolute fiddle. While Daemon was busy being overconfident about a false surrender, Ormund's real forces—alongside the actual Prince Daeron and his dragon Tessarion—executed a brilliant strategic detour, marching straight into the eastern Reach and brutally sacking the vital market town of Tumbleton. By locking the gates and embedding his army among the civilians, Ormund has effectively taken the town hostage, ensuring that if Rhaenyra tries to retaliate with dragonfire, she will be flambéing her own loyal subjects. With the active war officially reignited and her allies putting on massive pressure, Rhaenyra is learning the hard way that when you sit on the Iron Throne, the Red Keep leaves you with absolutely zero clean exits!
