The Thomas Hardy Library
In which Troy, wearied by the sorrows and tensions of his farm life, seeks refuge by the sea and is caught by a treacherous current while swimming along the rugged coastline, his solitary struggle against the waves shadowed by the distant town of Budmouth. His fortunes shift when a passing ship’s boat, crewed by sailor lads gathering sand, spots his distress and comes to his rescue, carrying him towards the dimming lights of shore as evening descends.
