The Senate Steps Into College Sports Chaos | Bill Bender Joins The Tim May Show

Bill Bender of The Sporting News joins Tim to talk about the talk, as in the Senate hearing that featured several luminaries from college sports present and past this past Wednesday to chime in on the bipartisan bill put forth by Senators Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz as a step toward brininging laws - yeah they would be laws, not rules - and order to the wild, wild west of major college sports. At least someone is trying, right?

The Senate held a hearing on Wednesday to hear comments from various college sports sources about the proposed bipartisan bill aiming to put a lasso around the wild, wild west of the transfer portal and burgeoning outlays for players in the simple pursuit of winning at almost any cost. Yes, hold your breath. Hahaha. Meanwhile, Tim caught up with longtime motorcycle racing star Larry Pegram, who in the last couple of seasons has turned much of his effort to 4-wheel racing with his daughter Riley, 21. They will have their trick Honda Civic on track as part of the IMSA Racing weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course outside Lexington.

Clay also speaks with Memorial Tournament executive director Dan Sullivan on the eve of the 51st event, which, as he explains to Clay, makes it the 50th anniversary of the tournament that Jack Nicklaus founded on the world-renowned course he designed and built. He talks with Tim about his beginnings, even his run as an oiler on a dredging boat in the Mississippi River delta region, before climbing the ladder in the SID world. That included a time at Temple, where he worked closely with one of the great basketball coaches of our time, John Chaney, from whom he received salient advice at just the right time.
