The Victor Hugo Library
In which Jean Valjean, carrying the silent Cosette through the shadowed, labyrinthine streets of old Paris, finds himself confronted by an ominous sentinel in a forgotten quarter whose melancholy façades and deserted lanes echo the vanished past. The figure of pursuit, a dark silhouette against the moonlit pavement, hemming him in on all sides, manifests the tightening snare from which there appears no escape.
