In which the curious old superstition of Montfermeil recounts the devil’s nocturnal labours in the forest, where black-clad figures with horn-like tools are said to bury mysterious treasures that bring naught but misfortune to those who seek them. Amidst this eerie legend, a certain road-labourer named Boulatruelle, himself a figure shrouded in suspicion and secrets, becomes the centre of local conjecture as he is caught furtively digging in the forest under the moonlight.
