CNN asked Sheriff John Ledbetter one direct question: have all the friends from the boat been interviewed? He didn't answer. More than a week into the Nolan Wells investigation, that's the pattern. The sheriff has confirmed witness interviews happened. He's confirmed FBI contact. He's confirmed his investigators are working with the District Attorney. He's praised public tips as "very productive." But the most basic question about the most basic investigative step gets silence — and Nolan's own best friend, who was on Horn Island that day and has been talking to every outlet that calls, says investigators have never contacted him. The new message from the sheriff is that his investigators will not be rushed. There's a problem with that framing. Conclusions can take a year. Evidence collection can't. Snapchat's servers hold deleted content for a limited recovery window. Location history gets purged on rolling schedules. Cell tower records — the dataset that could establish with one timestamp whether Nolan's phone left the island while he was still on it — cycle out. A one-page preservation letter could freeze all of it without a warrant. Whether one was ever sent, the public has no way of knowing. And the boat — the one that was supposedly taking on water, the entire reason four friends left one friend behind — has never been publicly inspected. A marine mechanic could verify or destroy that claim in an afternoon. Elmore Wonsley searched the island himself at dawn on a borrowed boat. The family keeps doing the state's work. The state keeps asking for patience. Episode 16 Siders Kids: Be Honest — Would YOU Have Made The Call? Cover

16 Siders Kids: Be Honest — Would YOU Have Made The Call?

Picture it honestly. You're in line at Dollar General. Same family as always — the quiet woman, the kids that look a little off, clothes not quite right, always near closing. You've noticed for months. Maybe years. There's a number you could call. You've never called it. Neither did anyone in Hamden, Ohio — and sixteen children paid for that silence with their childhoods. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins to explain why almost nobody makes that call, no matter how certain they are that they would. The psychology has a structure: first the mind minimizes what it saw, then it assigns responsibility elsewhere, then it constructs a reasonable explanation, and finally it forgets — all within seconds, all automatically, all while you keep believing you're the kind of person who acts. Scott has watched this machinery from inside the therapy room for a career, and she's blunt about how universal it is. The conversation ends where Tony wants every listener to sit: this case is not rare, discovery is rare, and the difference between the Siders children and the hidden children near you is one accidental warrant. What breaks the pattern isn't new laws. It's people who override the machinery. Scott explains what that override actually takes. Episode 16 Siders Kids: What The Turpin Case Warns Happens Next Cover

16 Siders Kids: What The Turpin Case Warns Happens Next

Everyone remembers the Turpin rescue. Thirteen children freed from a California house of horrors, a seventeen-year-old hero who escaped through a window, a wave of national sympathy and donated money. Almost nobody remembers what came after: several of those children homeless, others placed in foster homes where they were harmed again, the donated funds tangled in bureaucracy while the kids who needed them struggled. The rescue was the headline. The aftermath was the story. Now sixteen Siders children are starting down the same road, and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins to map what's actually ahead of them. Brains that developed inside one room. Language that never fully formed. An eighteen-year-old who can't write her name entering a world that runs on paperwork. Scott explains why these children's recovery depends less on therapy hours and more on decisions being made right now — placements, sibling separation, and whether the system that failed to find them can manage not to fail them twice. She also renders an honest verdict on the "almost feral" label, what it clinically describes, and whether sixteen kids can outrun a word that introduced them to the world. Episode 16 Siders Kids: Was Their Mother The First One Broken? Cover

16 Siders Kids: Was Their Mother The First One Broken?

Before Elizabeth Siders was a defendant, she was a fourteen-year-old carrying an eighteen-year-old's child. Before deputies found sixteen children in her house, a judge handed her over to the man who got her pregnant — with her parents' consent and the state's blessing. Her brother says she was "indoctrinated." He hadn't seen her in fifteen years. Now she faces sixteen felony counts, and the question this case can't escape is whether the first child failed inside that family was her. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott walks through the psychology of a woman shaped by control since childhood — what isolation from every outside relationship does to a person's grip on normalcy, whether someone raised inside distortion can recognize distortion, and what her attorney's account of her first question in jail (about her children, not her freedom) actually tells us. The conversation widens to the whole household: a husband running two realities daily, grandparents who anchored the arrangement, and a family system so sealed that investigators are now running DNA tests to map what "intrafamilial" really meant inside those walls. Scott doesn't excuse anyone. She explains how the machine worked. Episode Why Nolan Wells' Phone Ended Up at the Boat Owner's House Cover

Why Nolan Wells' Phone Ended Up at the Boat Owner's House

Hundreds filled the streets of Ocean Springs demanding answers about what happened to Nolan Wells. The sheriff still won't confirm whether everyone on the boat has been interviewed. Both autopsies are pending. And the single most important piece of evidence — Nolan's phone — still hasn't been turned over to law enforcement because his family doesn't trust Mississippi to handle it. Nolan went to Horn Island on July 4th with three friends. They came back. He didn't. Two days later, a park ranger found his body face down in the water at the same spot where he was last seen — after multi-agency searches found nothing the day before. His mother tracked his phone to the house of the family that owned the boat. Both Snapchat accounts were wiped clean. The girl he was talking to says he told her he was going back to the boat with the boys. The boys say he was staying with her. One of those stories is a lie. And the friends' mother who posted the "sinking boat" explanation on Facebook is a sitting Jackson County Chancery Judge — in the same county investigating Nolan's death. Her stepson was on the boat. The friends have lawyers. Nolan's best friend was never contacted by investigators. This is what a cover-up born out of panic looks like — and a system that is not pressing hard enough to break through it.
