Kohberger: What The Internet Got Wrong First

Two conspiracy theories have trailed the University of Idaho murders since before Bryan Kohberger was ever arrested, and Tony Brueski tackles both in this combined look at the case for True Crime Today.  The first theory ruined an innocent man's life before Kohberger was ever named a suspect in this case. The internet decided a grieving young man who'd just lost the woman he loved was responsible, largely because he called her phone repeatedly that morning, something with a completely innocent explanation once you know the full timeline. We break down why the roommates waiting hours to call 911 isn't the smoking gun people think, what their private writings do and don't show, the theory that they were spared for being involved, and why a judge called the internet's alternate suspects rank speculation.  The second theory says Kohberger's DNA was planted on the knife sheath left behind at the scene. The lab that tested it says the amount recovered wasn't a faint trace, it was hundreds of times more genetic material than investigators typically find in a case like this one. We go through the unidentified blood inside the house, the mismatched DNA under a victim's fingernails, the hair people insist was staged, the claim that genetic genealogy was concealed from the court, and the Amazon order for that same knife.  No clean motive isn't proof of innocence, and a guilty plea stacked on top of DNA, phone records, car evidence, and scanner data isn't how wrongful conviction cases usually look. Every red flag in the Celeste Rivas Hernandez case got logged by somebody, and not one of them connected the dots in time. Tony Brueski breaks down the full D4vd case for True Crime Today, starting with a welfare check that should have ended very differently.  Celeste was reported missing from Lake Elsinore three times in early 2024. That led Riverside County deputies to musician David Burke's phone number, and LA County deputies to his West Hollywood front door. Burke showed them a yearbook photo and claimed he'd met her only once. Deputies told him plainly that she was thirteen and a runaway, then left without further action.  Prosecutors allege what came next was deliberate. Burke is accused of paying one of Celeste's junior high classmates a thousand dollars to hand her a new phone so contact could continue uninterrupted. Over the following year, prosecutors say she traveled with him to Las Vegas, London, and Texas, met his family, got matching tattoos, and had his name on her ring finger, all while still in seventh grade.  The case takes an even stranger turn when you look at Burke's own music. His breakout single, the album it's from, and the alter ego he built around both all echo the allegations prosecutors are now making about a Hollywood Hills home. Seven months passed between investigators finding Celeste's remains and Burke's arrest, a stretch that included three grand jury panels, a friend fleeing to Montana to avoid a subpoena, and Burke's family fighting the grand jury in a Texas courtroom.  He now faces first-degree murder with special circumstances, including lying in wait, murder for financial gain, and murder of a witness. Nancy Guthrie's Hoaxer Walked Away With WHAT?!

Nancy Guthrie's family got fake ransom demands while search teams looked for her, and the man behind them just walked out of federal court with probation. Tony Brueski unpacks the plea deal, the sentence, and why it's landing as a slap in the face to everyone who's followed this case.  Harassment. That's what the four-million-dollar ransom note and the follow-up apology letter got reduced to. Five years of probation, every count running concurrently. Retired FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer put it plainly on the record: this outcome is a travesty, and it could invite more of the copycat extortion attempts investigators have started calling the TMZ Twelve.  The apology letter is its own strange piece of this. Sent only to local television stations, it called Nancy's death an accident, a claim nobody investigating this case has confirmed. Both that letter and the original ransom note were reportedly traced to the same IP address, one of the only real leads on the table. Porch Guy, another person connected to the case, still hasn't been identified or taken in.  And the contradictions don't stop with the hoaxer. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has spent this case fielding pointed questions about his own record, including one moment where he told a reporter to enjoy his hit piece instead of answering. The FBI and the Sheriff's Department keep pointing at each other over who's actually running point, and a retired agent says there's real disagreement inside the Bureau over whether some of the evidence holds up.  Even the physical evidence has a strange trail. One key item reportedly flew to Florida and back before anyone bothered running it against a database, which is not exactly standard operating procedure.  Nancy Guthrie is still missing. Sixteen kids. One small house in Hamden, Ohio. And a discovery that had nothing to do with anyone whose job it was to notice.  Deputies in Vinton County went to that property to serve a warrant tied to something else entirely. Ohio's Attorney General has been direct about it — nobody on that call expected children to be there. The school district had zero record of any of these kids.  The oldest, eighteen years old, reportedly can't write her own name, a fact that tells you exactly how far outside every system she'd been living.  Tony Brueski works through the people who lived around that house too. Retail workers describe years of small, specific details — clothing, hygiene, unusual closing-time errands — details they can now recite in full but somehow never reported at the time. A neighbor seventy feet from the property maintains he never saw a child there across six years. A psychotherapist unpacks the mental shortcuts — the kind everyone uses — that turn a nagging feeling into something easy to ignore.  Four adults now face sixteen counts each of second-degree felony child endangering, all pleading not guilty, with no indictment returned so far.  From there the episode pulls back to the bigger, uglier machine: a mandated-reporter system that assigns duty without consequence, a funding structure built to reward states for removing children rather than finding them, and a comparable failure out of Washington, D.C., where four girls died inside a system a federal judge had watched over for nineteen years.  An accident found these kids.
