The USMNT's World Cup Run Ends With A Thud

The United States Men's National Team's run in the 2026 World Cup ended Monday night with a 4-1 knockout loss to Belgium. Despite FIFA (thanks perhaps in response to a phone call from President Trump) allowing the USA's top scorer Folarin Balogun to play after a red-card suspension during the team's match with Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Americans looked flat almost from the start. For his part, Balogun was a non-factor in the game with just one shot on goal.   And Balogun wasn't alone in struggling.  Christian Pulisic was another in a line of American players who underperformed. When it comes to underperforming, you need look no further than the New York Yankees offense. After getting swept in a 4-game series by the Red Sox (which Jim Monaghan said last week [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2454192/episodes/19424536] would be nothing more than a blip on the screen), the Yankees were swept by the Minnesota Twins, and dropped a series against the Minnesota Twins. A Blip for the Yankees, a Disaster for the Mets

Right now the Mets and Red Sox appear to be going in two different directions. And relax, Yankees fans.  You won't remember this past weekend by the end of July. Following a 4-game weekend sweep of the Yankees and a Monday night win over the Nationals, the Red Sox appear to have found some momentum. The Mets?  They are firmly entrenched in last place in the NL East and on the day they fired their manager, the Mr. Met mascot was seen cavorting on camera behind SNY's Steve Gelbs as he was discussing what had happened to Carlos Mendoza. Needless to say, that wasn't a good look.  In actuality, they're actually both going in the exact same direction - nowhere. Both teams are in last place and while the Red Sox may be showing some signs of life, the reality is that they are not going to make the playoffs. So both appear to be sellers at the upcoming trade deadline which begs the question - who is going to be the one making trade decisions for each team? David Stearns of the Mets and Boston's Craig Breslow each put together horrible rosters and then fired their respective managers. If you're a fan of either team, do you REALLY want one of them making any kind of roster decisions going forward? A lot of former New Jersey high school football players have been in a Super Bowl.  Only a handful of them are quarterbacks. Joe Theismann is one of them. A product of South River High School, Joe went to Notre Dame where he was an All-American and an Academic All-American, as well as being in contention for the coveted Heisman Trophy ( he would ultimately finish second to Jim Plunkett of Stanford).   A three-year career in the Canadian Football League was followed by twelve years in the NFL which included a pair of Super Bowl appearances. Joe and Jim Monaghan talk about college football and the impact of the transfer portal and NIL money, and how much of a nearly year-round sport the NFL has become. Is Jalen Brunson the Greatest Knick Ever?

That's clearly a loaded question given the number of GREAT players who have worn the Knicks' uniform over the years. But if his performance in the 2026 NBA Playoffs, especially the championship-winning series versus the Spurs, doesn't put Jalen Brunson at the top, he's certainly in the top 2 alongside Willis Reed. Brunson did what no other Knick has done in 53 years - lead the team to an NBA championship. Of course, between his teammates and the utter collapse of the San Antonio Spurs, Brunson had a lot of help. Let's talk about the Spurs for a minute. Do you have any idea how hard it is to blow a 29-point lead in the second half of a game?  It brings to mind the Red Sox comeback against the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS and the Patriots overcoming a 28-3 Falcons lead in the 2017 Super Bowl. With A Game 3 Knicks Loss, the NBA Finals Got A Lot More Interesting

If the cliche that a playoff series doesn't get interesting until the home team loses, then there should be three times the interest in the NBA Finals right now because the home team has lost in each of the first three games so far. On one hand, it's not all that surprising. Despite the fact that the Knicks won Game 1 easily and managed to corral a win in Game 2, the Spurs didn't lose three games in a row all year.  So faced with a loss that would have put them down three games to none, San Antonio found a way to neutralize the New York offense down the stretch of the fourth quarter and take Game 3.
