What It Actually Means to Be the "Light of the World" | Umbrella of Mercy

In this episode, Nicky and Brandon dive deep into a conversation about what it truly means to follow Jesus' call to be the "light of the world." It's easy to get caught up in the praise of ministry, but where do we draw the line between genuine service and false humility? They challenge the modern Church's trap of celebrity culture, the morality of wealth in a broken world, and how institutions risk "missing the moment" by prioritizing political battles over community innovation, healing, and fighting injustice. In this video, we discuss: Navigating compliments, gifts, and the danger of conceit in ministry. The biblical definition of idolatry and injustice. A candid critique of mega-churches and capitalist religiosity. How to keep your light from dimming when the news is full of injustice. The weight and strict judgment that comes with having a platform. Does Your Love Look Like Jesus? Umbrella of Mercy Ep13

One of the most convicting questions followers of Christ can ask is whether their love actually looks anything like His. Jesus never required people to prove their worth before extending compassion, care, or dignity. He acted first and explained later. The woman caught in adultery was surrounded by a crowd ready to stone her, and Jesus did not debate her guilt or demand a public confession. He knelt down and protected her. That is the standard we are called to measure ourselves against, not a filtered or tradition-softened version of Jesus, but the One who met people exactly where they were. Many Christians have grown up in systems, whether church, cultural, or family, that taught a version of love rooted in power rather than grace. This shows up in the tendency to make theological agreement the qualifying factor for who receives empathy or basic dignity. It also shows up in phrases like hate the sin, love the sinner, which often end up rejecting the whole person while calling it love. True love, the kind Jesus modeled, does not make people perpetually dependent on others to speak for them. It builds up, equips, and steps back. It works to restore voice and dignity rather than replace it. Genuine love and genuine repentance are inseparable. If we have participated in systems or patterns that have caused harm through racism, exclusion, or silence, love requires more than a change in tone. It requires a turning away. That means acknowledging not just personal wrongdoing but also the ways we have upheld structures that have hurt others. The invitation this week is to honestly examine your own definition of love, hold it up next to how Jesus loved in the Gospels, and then take one concrete step toward someone or a community you have found it difficult to extend genuine love toward. Is Love Supposed to Cost You Something? | Umbrella of Mercy Ep. 12

We all like the idea of loving like Jesus... right up until it actually costs us something. 😅 In episode 12 of our Umbrella of Mercy series, we're doing a quick status check on how we're doing as practitioners of sacrificial love. True love isn't just a warm feeling—it's a choice to lay down our comfort, our preferences, and sometimes our sanity for the sake of others. Join us as we look at how leaning into God's mercy gives us the strength to serve one another and level up our generosity, shifting from a place of "convenient" faith to a lifestyle of real, sacrificial love. Do We Actually Have to Like Each Other? | Umbrella of Mercy Ep. 10

What happens when "church family" feels more exhausting than encouraging? In Episode 10 of Umbrella of Mercy, we're asking the uncomfortable question: Do we actually have to like each other? It's easy to talk about Christian community, but it's a lot harder to live it out when personalities clash, offenses happen, and people get on your nerves. In this conversation, Brandon and Nicky look past the surface-level pleasantries to talk about the raw reality of spiritual family, the boundaries of grace, and what it looks like to stay at the table when loving each other gets tough. In this episode, we unpack: The Reality of Friction: Why church community is naturally messy (and why that's okay). Grace vs. Enabling: How to practice unconditional love without sacrificing healthy boundaries. Staying at the Table: What Jesus actually meant when He commanded us to love one another.
