Lighting the Sacred Fire

I start this sermon with a question in honor of the annual change of the calendar, and this year’s question is more quixotic than usual, but you’ll understand in a few minutes why…  What gave you hope in 2025? Some of you are contemplating whether in fact, I have actually lost my attunement to reality. Did you and I live through the same year? Did you experience what I experienced?  This question arose as I saw the collective response to the end of 2025 as one of relief.

The calendar often crams Halloween and All Souls together, but this year’s disbursement of dates seemed to invite separating the two in our Sunday services. While Halloween and All Souls are entangled in mythology, each holiday has its own vibe, and today we examine Halloween, while next Sunday, we will honor All Souls. Our CUUPS groups honor Samhein during this time, yet another kindred holiday. In this church, we celebrate with a Halloween festival, not a fall festival, but a true Halloween holiday as a safe place for our kids.
