Victim Services provides support immediately following a crime or sudden tragedy. Today we are speaking with Tazio Clarke, a social worker, pastor and manager with the Victim Services program about the importance of providing a safe space for victims. Over the years his work experience has also allowed him to support individuals who are incarcerated and he has come to realize, those committing crimes also bear the tragic stories of hurt. Although, this does not necessarily excuse the behavior or the actions it has helped Tazio to better understand the complexity behind the work he performs.   A Family That Heals Together Podcast is a weekly conversation with Kyle Carter and Carole Sandy. They are both deeply passionate about the ripple effect that can alter the path of communities and future generations that do not confront the issues of incarceration.  Rev. Kyle Carter is a Duty Chaplain in a maximum-security correctional Detention Centre, with over fifteen years of experience working with community organizations, emergency residential care and the homeless. As a Restorative Justice facilitator, he prepared attendees for difficult conversations, including meeting with their victims. He encourages families facing major life changes and understands the value in running art programs and healing circles within communities and prisons.  Carole Sandy is a Couple and Family Therapist and a Registered Social Worker who has worked alongside families, and individuals facing domestic violence, family break-ups and formally incarcerated individuals effected by their past actions. She comes with over fifteen years of experience counselling, coaching and advising individuals. The Cross and the Switch Blade

Men who find themselves trying to turn a new leaf following a life of crime often feel like they have limited options. It can be challenging when they are trying to change their identity and form healthy relationships. The recidivism rates for released prisoners in the United States of America is 60% compared with 50% in the United Kingdom and here in Canada the recidivism rate is roughly 35 percent for men and 20 percent for women. Therefore, when we formally incarcerated individual have people around them to mentor and support them while they out it offers them hope and this is what our guest today was able to provide on the streets of the UK. Joseph Mullings who was able to use his contacts in the Square Mile, in the UK to train young people in how to set up and run a business with one mentor advising them on what to do while stressing the importance of the work. He established a healthy place for them to discuss their fear and concerns with men that looked like them and offered them a fresh perspective. Families with a Child Behind Bars

Welcome to episode 1: Families with a Child Behind Bars. Our guest this week is a mother and correctional officer who knows firsthand what families face when they have a loved one who is incarcerated. She shares her challenges with having a child who is incarcerated and how that impacts her other children along with her fears around life in prison. She also touches upon how the system influences the way those incarcerated see themselves and ultimately understood their world. She talks further about how families and especially parents try to support their children as they return home and the difficulties that occur as they take on that new role of caregiver.
