Creativity conversations for artists, or just artsy types. Joy and Teresa are two life-long friends who have been having a 40-year conversation about culture and creativity, and they've expanded the conversation to include you. They both have day jobs, but what they really love is creating and talking about art, writing, music, metalsmithing, painting--figuring out how to create something from nothing. artsytypes.substack.com

Fresh Starts and Old Ruts: How to Navigate Creativity's Ups and Downs

Teresa is on the cusp of a fresh start as she moves into a new home and studio, while Joy is in a creativity slump. In this episode, Teresa and Joy talk about the up and down phases that exist for all artists and how to navigate seasons of creativity. In their “Last Thing I Wrote” segment, Joy brings quotes from recent books that inspired her, and Teresa is writing about roadkill and antique books. During the closing Gen X segment, we learn which of the two Artsy Types used encyclopedias, owned a Swatch and had the “elite” yellow Walkman. Instagram follower and artist Suz Matthews and the Cowgirl Artists of America get shoutouts. ~Show Notes and Links~ The Effects of Natural Daylight on Creativity [https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9363772/] The Devil in the White City [https://penguinrandomhousesecondaryeducation.com/book/?isbn=9780375725609] Sony Walkman [https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/design/bside/01_throwback_walkman/] This is a public episode. Digital Detox: Results of the 2-Week Experiment

The two-week digital detox has drawn to an end, and Joy reports to Teresa how her life changed while going off-grid. What were the hardest parts, did she ever cheat on the experiment, and did being away from the phone jump start her creativity? While Joy was staying away from social media, Teresa was monitoring the Artsy Types Pod Instagram account and shares followers’ advice. Joy offers a mixed-review of Stephen King’s 11/22/63, and Teresa has been reading Stillness is the Key by Ryan Holiday. Tube socks and leg warmers make their debut in the Gen X segment, and Teresa bemoans her old Holly Hobby lunch pail. ~Show Notes and Links~ Teresa Packing Her Studio [https://www.instagram.com/reel/DX5Y0_PB63h/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==] Darci Shea on Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/darci_shea/?hl=en] Stillness is the Key [https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/43582733-stillness-is-the-key] by Ryan Holiday [https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/43582733-stillness-is-the-key] Holly Hobby Lunch Boxes on eBay [https://www.ebay.com/b/Holly-Hobbie-Lunch-Box/1410/bn_7023238817] This is a public episode. episode Digital Detox: A Two-Week Experiment cover

Digital Detox: A Two-Week Experiment

Joy decides to go off-the-grid for two weeks in an attempt to re-set thought patterns, gain time, spur creativity and live life outside the distorted lens of social media. Teresa suggests parameters for the experiment and offers advice after her own attempts to work in silence. During the digital detox, Joy will keep a journal of observations and in the following episode report whether she made it the entire two weeks. Rabbit Holes and Recommendations returns with the discovery of a contemporary artist and the rediscovery of a classic country western album. The episode starts with a welcome message to the Austin Community College Jewelry Program and ends with some 1980s-era warnings about Halloween candy and the dangers of digestion and swimming. ~Show Links and Notes~ Austin Community College Jewelry Program [https://sites.austincc.edu/jewelry/] Considering a Digital Detox? Honesty in Art: Let's Get Personal

Honesty is the foundation of good art, but is there such a thing as being too honest? Spurred on by a beautifully forthright statement that Teresa recently made on Instagram, this episode’s conversation explores where the line is between artistic confessionalism and trauma dumping. As the episode moves along, there’s a segment on “The Last Thing That Inspired Me” that brings out favorites in television and music, which naturally leads into. . .the Bermuda Triangle, Ouija Boards and quicksand, and finishes with a shout out to a special artist that, one might say, gave birth to Artsy Types. ~Show Links and Notes~ Let It Happen by Tame Impala David Sedaris' Tips for Writing About People You Know [https://www.masterclass.com/articles/how-to-write-about-people-you-know-with-david-sedaris] The Conversation by Teresa Kiplinger https://silverpoet.com/blogs/gallery/the-conversation [https://silverpoet.com/blogs/gallery/the-conversation] The Surprisingly Simple Trick to Escape Quicksand [https://www.sciencefocus.com/news/simple-trick-to-escape-quicksand] This is a public episode. episode Trends We Love, Trends We Hate cover

Trends We Love, Trends We Hate

The resurgence of plein air painting, over-the-top maximalism, visibility of the artist’s hand laid bare in finished work, the way museums treat sensitive subjects--Joy and Teresa look at cultural and artistic trends, extending the topic all the way into the Gen X segment and debating whether any 80s trends should return. “The Last Thing I Wrote” segment comes back, bringing with it roadkill and an eerie take on the neighborhood reaction to the HOA. The episode ends with a look at the creator and ArtsyTypes Instagram follower, Arthur Hash, who uses 3-D modeling in his jewelry practice with wonderful results. ~Show Notes and References~ Plein Air Painting Flourishes in the Adirondacks [https://www.adirondackexplorer.org/communities/history/plein-air-painting-festivals-flourish-in-the-adirondacks/] Schiaparelli's The Agony and the Ecstasy Collection [https://schiaparelli.com/en/pages/haute-couture-printemps-2026] The New Surrealism: On AI and Hallucinations [https://varnelis.substack.com/p/the-new-surrealism-on-ai-and-hallucinations] The History of Atari [https://atari.com/pages/history?srsltid=AfmBOopibs_Vd7YEmfB3iaF7tSkYJznDBy8aKO_34b6JxYS7cncf0ZCg] Jeweler Arthur Hash [https://www.arthurhash.com/] This is a public episode.
