Episode 5: Positive Vs Negative Comparison ft Body Image

In Today's episode we are talking all about comparison. I first open the discussion with speaking on jealousy, envy, and how they relate to comparison. I break this down by using the example of body image and how we can compare ourselves to one another in a positive light but also a negative one. Growing up as a Black Muslim women, when I watched western media or television, I never fit the beauty standard. I’m sure many of us can relate to internalizing western media and these standards of expectations of what we should look like, and it begins to subconsciously eat away and tamper at how we view ourselves. This then can plant a small seed of jealousy and envy because we are constantly seeing things that are praised and not fitting criteria EVEN IF you are confident in yourself. The environments we are in play a huge part in comparing ourselves and social media can be partially to blame. Even amongst hyping people up and spreading positivity on these applications we don’t see the damage even if we are not actively comparing ourselves. The true damage is when we leave these applications and our subconscious takes over and we start to pick apart things others may have and you don’t. We all have insecurities and it’s wether we give the power to them to make us insecure. This generation is a constant battle of living beyond our means, this is not just financially but also physically. We see things we want and we are never satisfied, it's a greedy society where we praise artificial beauty over natural beauty. Not to say either or is better than the other, but this constant desire that we ALL have to conform to societal expectations and standards because of these comparisons, is more damaging than any good. I suggest we all have the choice in what life we want to lead, what things we want to change but rather we have to work and build on the relationships we have with ourselves so we can turn all negative comparisons into positive comparisons in a way that works for US.

In Today's episode which is a part two, is where we discuss the beauty in allowing ourselves to let go of expectations in friendships. We meticulously map out every second of our day at times and more times than we let on they never actually go to plan. This all stems from the idea that can be related back to friendships, and our day-to-day lives, where we are always scared to leave certain environments because we can’t let go of normalcy due to being so confined by the comfortable environments we are in. I talk about fear of ends and even fear of abandonment that we have all faced at some point in our lives. Inevitably these fears stem from planting seeds of doubt and worry where anxiety starts to grow and blossom. I say it all the time that thoughts are just thoughts and only hold power over us if we give power them. You can’t expect yourself to grow if you hold onto grudges, resentment, or onto expectations that we can’t control. Take control in letting things go because that is how you  able to give power to things before they overpower you.

In Today's episode it is broken up into two parts because it is a packed topic that can be discussed from various angles. I start the episode with stumbling on my words but continue the podcast to emphasize on the topic of discussion of letting go of mistakes and leading a perfectionist lifestyle which does not allow ourselves at times to be raw, unedited and authentic. Perfectionism is one of the leading barriers that holds us back from letting go. Although being a perfectionist has many benefits because with perfection comes ambition to strive to be a high achiever. However, there is a difference with being a high achiever who wants to achieve the best out of their life, rather than strive for perfection where it does not allow room for error or mishaps. The Art of Letting Go is not regretting things in your life in terms of going back and changing an event and having a negative outlook, but more-so working towards viewing a situation from a different perspective, one that accepts mistakes as life lessons and a learning opportunity to strive to achieve the best in the future, for future situations. In this episode my goal is to push listeners to be able to let go of expectations that hold us back from learning, growing and healing.

Episode 2: How to Leave “Toxic” Friendships

Today's episode is all about "toxic" friendships, what impacts them and how to essentially leave an environment that does not align with your values, morals or boundaries. I always get questions pertaining to this on my TikTok so I thought it was only fitting to make it my second episode. I put toxic in air quotations because we are all toxic, in some way shape or form and to leave an environment that doesn't suit your needs anymore you first must point the finger to yourself, and ask how you have contributed to that environment or friendship. We often love to blame shift and victimize ourselves when leaving friendships, but forget to understand our part that we had to play in them. This episode discusses the difficulties in maintaining friendships from an ADHD perspective as well as looking at attachment theory and how that contributes to how some people may label, or you may label yourself as "toxic." We as human beings are constantly, everyday, projecting our insecurities onto one another subconsciously most of the time and for others intentionally and consciously. Listen to this episode with compassion and learn how to take the beginning steps to leave a toxic friendship or even relationship in the healthiest way possible by also addressing your flaws and concerns through opening up positive lines of communication.

In today's first episode I talk about how content creation is lacking authenticity alongside discussions about how content creation should not have limits and shouldn't only focus on a singular niche. I started this podcast because when I started my healing journey I decided to delete all my social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat) and start to reconnect with myself and the world around me away from those platforms. It's crazy that it has now been 6 months and I've learned so much in the short period of time. This is where I recognized we as a society now lack authenticity wether that be in the media we consume or the content that we put out. We are so focused on making sure our pictures are face-tuned and perfect or that it fits a specific colour scheme that we forget what it was like to post a picture unedited, raw and real. Why is that we over post, overshare and are seemingly our "most authentic selves" on private stories and spam accounts and not our main posting platforms? Today's episode unpacks this along with calling this new social media marketing strategy of limiting ourselves to one niche a bunch of BS. As someone who has ADHD, and as a human being at that, we all are multifaceted and have various passions and niches so why must we confine to just one? Growing up as kids we were told to try EVERYTHING yet now stepping into young adulthood we are told to only choose ONE profession, one niche, one singular hobby. Stop limiting yourself based on the opinions of others and start what ever it is you are passionate about in the most authentic way possible.
