Episode 13 Brain Stories: Good Ideas - A Radical New Model for Mental Health Care

Welcome to the last episode of Season 1 and the first episode of our new direction. This is Brain Stories Phase 2 - Good Ideas about Mental Health. We kick off this new phase with uncommon lessons learned about mental health from the stories of the first 12 episodes. Then we dive into an interview with Dr. Steven Siegel. He led the creation of a new model for student health care that could radically change mental health care for absolutely everyone.  What separates it from almost everything else? Instead of being crisis-activated, Dr. Siegel has instituted a system that quickly assesses mental health for incoming students, and provides immediate resources from wellness care to hospitalization. You can find out more about it at sites.usc.edu/counselingandmentalhealth [https://sites.usc.edu/counselingandmentalhealth/]. You can learn more about Dr. Siegel at his webpage [https://keck.usc.edu/faculty-search/steven-siegel/] with the Keck School of Medicine.   The episode producer was Kate Rusk-Kosa.  We end this episode with a special treat! A soaring composition from our composer Paul Swartzel. episode Episode 11 - Michael pt. 2: Recovery: How to Become the Guy on the Giving-Back Side cover

Episode 11 - Michael pt. 2: Recovery: How to Become the Guy on the Giving-Back Side

This is the second and final episode of Michael Stewart's story. He had beaten his craving for drugs and gotten into one of the very few programs that treat mental illness and drug use. Which meant, the hardest part was about to begin. This is how Michael traveled the long, twisting road of recovery, rebuilding his life to become an outreach specialist - the guy on the giving-back side. The episode producer was psychiatrist Mark Ragins. He has written an excellent book entitled "Journeys Beyond the Frontier: A Rebellious Guide to Psychosis and Other Extraordinary Experiences." You can order it at your local bookstore or his website, markragins.com [http://markragins.com/]. Michael started his recovery at River Community, the very first residential treatment program for dual diagnosis in the United States. You can find out more about it at rivercommunityazusa.com [https://rivercommunityazusa.com/].   Michael trained for peer support and then worked at Project Reach Peer Support Network. Learn about them and the unique power of peer support at prpsn.org [https://www.prpsn.org/].   Both of those organizations are in southern California. If you want to find out about programs near you, go to the Treatment Advocacy Center's helpline at TAC.org/helpline [https://www.tac.org/helpline-for-severe-mental-illness/]. There, you can fill out a quick confidential form with your request and get an answer in 1-3 days. It's not for a crisis response, but they are a trustworthy resource.   Let us hear from you! episode Episode 10 - Michael pt. 1: Drugs, Voices and the Great Escape cover

Episode 10 - Michael pt. 1: Drugs, Voices and the Great Escape

For nearly 60 years, Michael Stewart's life was marked by violence from his childhood, addiction, suicidal thoughts, and a serious mental health issue.  Whether he was selling cars, getting put behind bars, or living on the streets, drugs and mental illness were two of the only constants in his life. For decades, Michael used for relief. "Drugs gave me the ability to open up and be more vulnerable than I had been before." The question was, could he figure out a way to be more vulnerable and survive without using? The Episode Producer was psychiatrist, Mark Ragins. He is the author of a riveting account of mental illness and treatment called "Journeys Beyond the Frontier: A Rebellious Guide to Psychosis and Other Extraordinary Experiences." It's a terrific read. Find out more about him and where to get the book at markragins.com [http://markragins.com]. Part 2 of Michael's story will be out on March 19th - mark your calendar! You can find clear overviews on dual diagnosis (mental illness and addiction) at: * National Alliance for Mental Illness [https://namimetro.org/related-conditions/dual-diagnosis], and  * National Library of Medicine [https://medlineplus.gov/dualdiagnosis.html].  Also check out research from the Treatment Advocacy Center (TAC), which found that 9 out of 10 people with schizophrenia and a drug use issue get *no* treatment for their drug use. In essence, treating only half of their problem. Even worse, another brief TAC did found that just 1 out of 8 people with schizophrenia and drug use issues got any treatment at all. How does anyone recover from an illness for which they receive no treatment? Links to the study and the brief are here [https://www.tac.org/smi-research-digest-treatment-for-comorbid-substance-use/] and here [https://www.tac.org/reports_publications/dual-diagnosis-serious-mental-illness-and-co-occurring-substance-use-disorders/].  Let us hear from you!
