Good Soil. Unexpected Places - Proper 10A (July 12, 2026)

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2281321/fan_mail/new] Comedians with Pastors Talking Bible pairs Pittsburgh standup comedians with two ELCA pastors to talk about the week's gospel text — badly, then well. Bob and Eric get back to weekly rhythm with resident comic theologians Abby Evans and Erick Williams, diving straight into Matthew 13's Parable of the Sower — no guest banter, straight to scripture. Expect: * A pastor-approved case for becoming mushroom manure when you die * Jesus explaining his own parable (and what that says about comedians who explain their jokes) * Eric's pivot: it's not that bad soil beats the odds — it's that good soil shows up where you don't expect it * A detour through the fall of Jerusalem and what "profligate" means "Even the challenging, difficult soil can be made better." --- Matthew 13:1–9, 18-23 (NRSVue) [1] That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. [2] Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. [3] And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. [4] And as he sowed, some seeds fell on a path, and the birds came and ate them up. [5] Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. [6] But when the sun rose, they were scorched, and since they had no root, they withered away. [7] Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. [8] Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. [9] If you have ears, hear!” [18] “Hear, then, the parable of the sower. [19] When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. [20] As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, [21] yet such a person has no root but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. [22] As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of this age and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. [23] But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” Hosted by Pastor Eric Damon and Pastor Bob Schaefer. DM Jesus - Proper 9A (July 5, 2026)

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2281321/fan_mail/new] Comedians with Pastors Talking Bible pairs Pittsburgh standup comedians with pastors to dig into the week's gospel text — no prep, no script, just an undefended first read of scripture and whatever happens when a comedian's in the room for it. Brian Bennett and Ryan Cobert are back for round two, and this time the tabletop-gaming frame stops being a fun parallel and starts doing real theological work. Turns out running a campaign and shepherding a congregation have more in common than either job posting admits. Expect: * Children jumping straight into the game in the marketplace — and what that says about who actually "gets" the invitation in Matthew 11 * DMing reframed as pastoral improvisation: collaborative storytelling instead of scripted outcomes * Ryan on vulnerability, hag villains, and why funerals might be the deepest form of play there is * Eric's case for "type 2 fun" — the kind of suffering that's only fun in retrospect — as a lens on the cross * The debut of Bobbert, a halfling barbarian built entirely on randomly rolled dice (he licks things) Tangents include: a Star Trek movie ranking nobody can agree on, the ethics of wearing the same shirt twice on camera, and a cold open that may end up being more memorable than the episode itself. 👉"If Jesus is inviting and the people are jumping right in and playing, the children get it." --- Matthew 11:16–19, 25–30 (NRSVue) [16] “But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, [17] ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ [18] “For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; [19] the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.” [25] At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; [26] yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. [27] All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. [28] “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Hosted by Pastor Eric Damon and Pastor Bob Schaefer. Join the community! Email us at cptbpod@gmail.com [//cptbpod@gmail.com]. Roll for Theology - Proper 7A (June 21, 2026)

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2281321/fan_mail/new] Comedians with Pastors Talking Bible is the podcast where Pittsburgh-area standup comedians join ELCA Lutheran pastors to explore the week's gospel text from the Revised Common Lectionary — because the people least likely to read the Bible undefended are sometimes the most interesting people to have read it first. This week: no comedians. In the first of two experimental summer episodes, Pastor Bob Schaefer and Pastor Eric Damon are joined by Pastor Brian Bennett and Pastor Ryan Kobert — two colleagues who also happen to be tabletop RPG players — to tackle Matthew 10:24–39. It's Father's Day. The text opens with Jesus saying he came not to bring peace, but a sword. The lectionary has no chill. Expect: * A crash course in tabletop RPGs, LARPing, and video game RPGs — what they share, where they diverge, and why the Venn diagram between collaborative storytelling, comedy, and preaching is doing real theological work * The insight that may reframe how you read scripture forever: the Bible isn't the story — it's the stat sheet; the church is the continuing campaign * Two Christianities in America, one centered on obedience and one centered on love, and a word about which one Jesus was actually running * Rules as written vs. rules as intended — a question tabletop gamers and Lutherans are apparently both losing sleep over * The Satanic Panic, annotated by someone whose pastor just asked to sit in and watch * A natural 20 on the worthiness question: "Because I love you, therefore be worthy of me" > "The scripture isn't the story. It's the stat sheet." — Pastor Eric Damon Matthew 10:24–39 | Proper 7 / Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Year A (NRSVue) Jesus said to the twelve, "A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! "So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. "Everyone, therefore, who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven, but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one's foes will be members of one's own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it." Let me know if you want anything adjusted before this goes in. The Worst Barre Class - Proper 6A (June 14, 2026)

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2281321/fan_mail/new] What does it take to be sent out in Jesus' name? Apparently: no money, no bag, no second tunic, and a working knowledge of exactly how bad crucifixion is on your core. Resident Comic Theologians Abby Evans (@itsabbye) and Erick Williams (@comicaledubs) join us to tackle Proper 6A — the commissioning of the Twelve — and somehow we arrive there through a detailed anatomical detour into Roman execution technique. In this Short Take, expect: * A biomechanical explanation of crucifixion that reframes it as the original barre class ("T-position. Hold for eternity.") * Judas Iscariot as Aaron Burr — tragic figure, defined entirely by his one bad moment * Why Sodom and Gomorrah's actual sin has nothing to do with what you think it does — and why that matters for this text * The harvest is plentiful, the laborers are few — and what that means for congregations that are shrinking * Jesus Christ Superstar, the Apostles on social media, and Alex Jones as an unintentional object lesson in how not to read Matthew 10 * "Autobots, assemble" as a legitimate summary of the Great Commission > "I have never thought of crucifixion as the worst barre class until now." — Erick Williams Matthew 9:35–10:23 (NRSVue) [35] Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness. [36] When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. [37] Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; [38] therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” [1] Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. [2] These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee and his brother John; [3] Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus and Thaddaeus; [4] Simon the Cananaean and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. [5] These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not take a road leading to gentiles, and do not enter a Samaritan town, [6] but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. [7] As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ [8] Cure the sick; raise the dead; cleanse those with a skin disease; cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. [9] Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, [10] no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff, for laborers deserve their food. [11] Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. [12] As you enter the house, greet it. [13] If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. [14] If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. [15] Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. [16] “I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. [17] Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues, [18] and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the gentiles. [19] When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you at that time, [20] for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. [21] Sibling will betray sibling to death and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, [22] and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. [23] When they persecute you in this town, flee to the next, for truly I tell you, you will not have finished going through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. En fantastisk app med et enormt stort udvalg af spændende podcasts. Podimo formår virkelig at lave godt indhold, der takler de lidt mere svære emner. At der så også er lydbøger oveni til en billig pris, gør at det er blevet min favorit app.
