In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, anti-racism educator, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Toni Simmons Henson, executive director of The Southeastern Theatre Conference. They focused on the trauma of and challenges of communicating across lines of difference, the impact of making a political statement just by showing up in a room as oneself, and the importance of self-care for women and mothers who tend to give everything of themselves to their families and can forget to prioritize their own needs. Toni Simmons Henson has over 30 years of expertise in business development, marketing, theatre, and arts administration. She has successfully launched and operated several franchises and businesses throughout her career. One notable venture is Micah 6-8 Media, LLC, responsible for producing the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival, ranked top festival to visit in the world and the Black Family Table Talk, a top ranking podcast. She is also a published poet, best-selling author, public speaker, and award-winning entrepreneur. Henson is an alumna of New York University, where she earned an MPA in Nonprofit Management, and Howard University, where she obtained her BBA in Business. Additionally, Henson has earned two Executive Certificates, one in Non-profit Management and one in Women in Leadership. In this episode, Jill interviews Dr. Ilise Cohen, a Sephardi-Mizrahi Jewish scholar-activist. They talked about Dr. Cohen’s anti-Zionist activism journey and the harmful ways that Jews are indoctrinated in Zionism. Listen to discover some of the ways that we can have hope when fighting against systemic oppression. Dr. Ilise Benshushan Cohen is a long time scholar and activist on Palestine/Israel, AFSC middle east program director, and board chair of first iteration of Eyewitness Palestine and delegation leader for over 17 years. Now part of the BIJOCSM network, Dr. Cohen is involved in SEDQ: Global Jewish Network for Justice. She holds a Ph.D. in Postcolonial Anthropology specifically focused on state violence toward Mizrahi Jews in Israel and the relationship to Palestinian experiences. Currently, Dr. Cohen is helping to raise funds for people to aid in Palestine solidarity and protective presence in the West Bank. What is a pilgrimage and why did pro-Palestinian protestors start doing them? How do the identities of being Christian and being Palestinian intersect in activism? In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, anti-racism educator, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this episode, Jill interviews Lydia El-Sayegh, a local Christian Palestinian activist. Lydia gives details about how her Christian religious tradition motivates her to respond to injustice, and she also shares her experiences being Palestinian in America. Lydia El-Sayegh was born and raised in Atlanta, and studied biomedical engineering at Georgia Tech. She has spent her early career working at humanitarian non-profits as well as in medical device development. As of late, she has been accelerating towards local activism and advocacy. She was driven to this path primarily due to the oppression of her family and community in Gaza, Palestine and explores what it looks like to advocate in different contexts. Finding herself in American, Christian, engineering, international development, and other spaces, Lydia has used her voice and unique experiences to shed light on connections to injustice in Palestine.
